The SATA 6Gb / s standard, together with the AHCI protocol, has long been a bottleneck when it comes to building and deploying fast SSDs. With the latest SSDs in the compact and very fast M.2 standard the limit of the sata controller has been lifted. While the gross data rate for SATA is at a maximum of 600 MB / s and net of it about 550 MB / s can be used as actual data throughput, there are already four PCIe 2.0 lanes with a gross capacity of 1,000 MB / s and with current mainboards with PCIe 3.0 even nearly 2,000 MB / s - more than three times as fast as the fastest SATA standard. In addition, when using an NVMe SSD, the speed boost comes through the new protocol,

PCI Express 2.0 is available on virtually every motherboard, PCIe 3.0 is also increasing - but M.2 ports on the board itself are still in short supply, and it's usually just a single slot. Very often, this is also connected to only two PCIe lanes, which significantly limits the speed potential. The solution: this adapter! With the adapter offered here, it is possible to put an M.2-SSD into operation via a PCI Express slot of the mainboard. There are almost no limits to the compatibility: the adapter itself has a low overall height and is supplied with both a standard and a low-profile slot cover. A repositionable spacer makes it possible to install SSDs in the common formats 22110, 2280, 2260 and 2242, and also with the PCIe slot, the adapter with its support of PCIe 1.0 / 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 is very flexible. A heatsink made of aluminum ensures sufficient cooling.

Fitted my old Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 board and works with WD Blue SN550

I was reading about these new-fangled NVMe drives and decided to try this out with a matching drive (WD Blue SN550). As my board (GA-990XA-UD3) is somewhat old this product, which says it supports PCI 1, seemed a good bet. I installed the drive on the adapter and plugged it in and fired up my Win7/Ubuntu20 PC into Ubuntu. 'Disks' saw it and allowed me to format it, and I then moved Metro 2033 Redux onto it as that was noticably slow to load prior to this drive. That worked really well and load is a lot quicker, I am very pleased with this.
