Very pleased with purchase

Upgraded from a mid-range Samsung 1080 monitor and the difference is staggering. I was a little apprehensive after hearing reports on other sites of the the glow in the corners which seem to be an issue with IPS monitors but I can't detect much at all, like another reviewer maybe just a tad lighter in bottom right corner but I just had to turn the lights off and put a full black image on screen and even then it's very very subtle - not something that's going to be a problem plus I've not spent much time calibrating the screen as yet.
I'm a keen photographer and my photos look great with very good colour reproduction.
The monitor came with a copy of Doom (steam key) which looks great (and shockingly gory!) but I can't vouch for the gaming/freesync side of things yet as I've got a very old graphics card (HD6900) and have pre-ordered new card to power the 1440p resolution (Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro+ bring it on).
As per my previous experiences with purchasing from OC, all went smoothly and I'm a happy customer.

Just awesome

Upgraded from a 1080p 24 " monitor and haven't looked back since. playing project cars/bf4 in 1440p/ultra is just awesome. No issues with any dead pixels and only slight IPS glow in the bottom right corner which you can only notice on a black screen in a very dark room. Set up out of the box is very easy and the default picture mode is actually very good once you turn the brightness down. Very happy with this monitor

Superb

Having been using this a few days now, it replaced an old Dell which was ok but only 60hz and had taken to changing it's settings at random starting up. Anyway, out of the box this came with zero stuck or dead pixels, and only minimal IPS glow which was a relief! It also now comes with a UK cable, as well as a Euro 2 pin. The default 'racing' setup isn't a bad start apart from turning the brightness way down, and the thing looks very crisp & smooth on the desktop, with very good colour reproduction and viewing angles.
The Freesync has to be enabled in the OSD before you can turn it on in the drivers which confused me at first, and you have to cap your FPS to 90 if you want to avoid getting tearing above that. Although you can now unlock Freesync above that range with a bit of fiddling, though I've not done it yet.
The only downside is the included speaker is awful, seriously painful to listen to, not taken a mark off for that because I doubt many people would use it.

Short version: Great monitor especially if you're in the AMD camp, and good service from OCUK.

From TN to IPS....

..Is truly a revelation. My now old monitor, BenQ XL2420T, sits beside this monster. ( my wife gets free upgrades, heh ). The difference is chalk and cheese. I really thought my BenQ was bright but the direct comparison shows me different.
Very Impressed by ASUS and as usual Overclockers are second to none.
Keep up the good work all at OC, been a customer for many many years and always very happy.
Cheers!!

A definite improvement from old Samsung

Things to note. It comes with a European two pin plug. I swapped its plug out with an old plug from a Corsair PSU. Works fine. On to the monitor and what's in the box. Easy to assemble, literally one screw (no screw driver needed). Cables included: HDMI, mini Display Port, USB 3.0, USB 3.0 to Thunderbolt (I think). The joystick behind the monitor to control settings is great and makes on the fly game mode change simple. Also turning on Freesync can be done from the monitors menu. If you don't turn it on here it will not come up as an option on AMD Catalyst. There really is surprisingly little information about this and the general set up of freesync. You'll need the latest driver to be installed so it works smoothly.

I'm using a Sapphire R9 290 Vapour X OC edition which would run most games at 60fps on ultra on my old Samsung TN panel at 1080p. The best example I can give you is with The Witcher 3. At 1080p the game would run mostly at 60fps. Dipping down to 45fps in busy areas like Novigrad. V-sync would help compensate some of these issues but there would still be some tearing and stuttering. Welcome Asus MG279Q. At 1440p I thought this would mean I would have to drop all settings to Medium/High. Thankfully this was not the case. Fps dropped to 45-50fps regular areas, 35-40fps in busy areas. Which would have felt a lot slower if not for the Freesync range being 35-90hz. This makes it run as smooth as 60fps as no frames are being missed. There was a recall of the unit back to Asus so they could have a firmware update as they were skipping frames but this issue has been fixed.

Word of warning. I bought this from Overclockers as they knew about the recall and stopped all orders. They have recently had more come back. I would be dubious about buying from the Amazon retailer who hasn't stopped selling them from their release date. So they may have not been sent back to Asus for a firmware update.

The colours on the unit are rich and the quality of the monitor is brilliant. The only downside of the screen is when in dark scenes there is a slight glow in each corner. Not completely distracting as the blacks on screen are deep and give scenes a great amount of depth.

I still need to play around with the options to get the most ideal picture. So far I am very impressed. Only taking a star off for the glow and the incorrect plug coming with UK units. Oh also on a bonus note... Somewhat, Asus have bundled it with a free copy of Assassins Creed Unity. I have seen that the pc version of Unity was very poorly optimised. Hopefully Freesync will smooth out some of the jagged edges with topsy tirvey frame rate.

I hope this review helps. There really is little information about these new monitors. But I cannot stress how vital that 35-90hz refresh rate is to owners of less that pinnacle GPU's. All other Freesync monitors seem to have a range of 40-144hz which is fine if you're running a 290x or a 295x2 but seeing as Freesync does not yet support crossfire. If you have mid to high range card that supports Freesync then I highly rate this monitor. Any questions about it I will try and answer.

Perfect

Absolutely amazing picture out the box , easy to install, and calibrate, it comes with hdmi, display and mini display port cables . Freesync works flawless in CS GO . Good cable management, perfect stand. A bit pricey but quality never comes cheap. Probably best gaming monitor for AMD grafic cards and not only . Has a high grade IPS panel working at 144Hz and ~5ms response
Highly recommended

Superb gaming monitor

I had wanted to try a 144hz monitor with Freesync for a while, but the lack of IPS options had held me back. That all changed with the MG279Q and you can now how the best of both worlds: fast refresh rate and superior color accuracy and viewing angles. The monitor is very easy to set up with Freesync which works splendidly to reduce tearing while gaming. I don't really find the 35-90hz range with Freesync enabled a limitation as that's about where my FPS stays in most modern games with my current card (290x) while at 1440p. Color accuracy is superb, nearly as good as my Dell UP2414Q. The stand is easy to adjust and sturdily built. IPS glow is minimal compared to others I've used. My unit came in perfect condition with no dead/stuck pixels.

It was a bit disappointing when Asus recalled this model early one due to a frame skipping issue at 144hz, but the wait was well worth it. Additionally, coming from a 24" 4k monitor, the loss of DPI is noticeable, but a worthwhile trade off to have Freesync and a high refresh rate.

Asus MG279Q unboxing and installation.

Comes with a mini Display port to regular display port cable, hdmi, thunderbolt to USB 3.0. The power plug supplied is two pin European. I am using an old 250volt power plug from a corsair cx750 and it works fine. I am running freesyn with a r9 290 vapour x 4gb card. Downloaded latest drivers and made sure freesync was turned on in the Monitors settings. All four corners in dark colours and blacks are a bit washed out. Nothing to stop enjoyment of the screen. Monitor actively tells you when freesync is enabled/disabled. With stated GPU managed 38-50fps on Witcher 3 on ultra settings at 1440p. Freesync remained engaged for a whole 2 hours play through. Included visits to Novigrad. So far I am impressed and will update the review with more information after a couple of weeks or so.
