Monitor good Asus bad

Weeks and many emails and still unable to register my monitor. Without registration no warranty nor access to redeem code and Doom. Very annoying and Asus are in no hurry to rectify.

Very good but blacks as black as a white cat in a snowstorm ...

This is an interesting monitor with one very obvious flaw.
The resolution is amazing of course and my example arrived pixel perfect. The colours really are superb because of the IPS display and the G-Synch really works very well. The controls are extremely easy to use because of the mini joystick. However:
Using this monitor takes me right back to the days of cathode ray tubes because it's IMPOSSIBLE to achieve a good black level on this thing. The IPS glow is so pervasive that even with the brightness down at 17% a black image is glowing silver. This is NOT backlight bleed becauseI have a small amount of that too and it's different, this is the default glow of the cheap IPS panel that ASUS is using and it's nasty! Admittedly it's only really obvious in a dark room and with a near fully black image but if like me you play (for example) Elite Dangerous then you'll definitely notice it and will definitely be irritated. My old NEC tft monitor that this one replaced had no problem giving me good blacks, likewise my 6 year old Samsung 1080p TV but this state of the art ASUS 4K monitor just won't do it.
I mentioned backlight bleed, well the trend for very thin bezels and LED sidelighting is just asking for trouble and there are several small areas of leakage on my monitor but I can't be bothered to RMA it as apparently it's almost normal for ASUS and this design. A classic example of style of substance: make the machine do its job and only THEN add the styling!
Approach with caution.

An incredible monitor

Quite simply put, this is an absolutely incredible monitor.

The IPS panel is vibrant, with an excellent colour representation. By default, the monitor comes with the brightness set far too high, so I would recommend turning it down to around 60% as your first port of call.

You are going to need a GTX970 as an absolute minimum to run this, and even then you will get frame drops. Ideally you're going to want a dedicated GTX980 or a GTX980Ti to run this monitor on it's own.

I have paired this with a Palit GTX980 Jetstream model and it very comfortably runs most of my games at a solid 60FPS. When you drop beneath 60FPS, Gsync kicks in and ensures that there is no screen-tearing for a beautifully smooth experience.

One minor niggle is that to save space in the unit itself, it comes with an external power supply. In addition, this power supply requires a 'Cloverleaf' cable, rather than a standard C13/IEC 'Kettle Lead'.

However, the unit was supplied with both UK and European power leads, a standard Displayport cable (I needed a mini-DP (male) to Displayport (female) adapter to plug it into my 980), and a USB 3 cable.

Don't even try running this over HDMI. Due to the bandwidth required, HDMI will cap out just below ~25Hz. Displayport or nothing.

If you are umm-ing and aah-ing over this monitor, then I thoroughly recommend that you buy it. You will not be disappointed - as long as you're running an nVidia card.

Ok.I had to sell my house and right hand to afford this beast but it was worth it. The only problem is that I no longer have a hand to use my mouse with..making this monitor useless to me. This is major flaw with this product and I think Asus need to go back to the drawing board.

"Our winning screen for 2015 was the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ, which managed to tick all of our boxes at the start of November. At £720, it isn’t the cheapest 4K panel you will find in the market, but across a range of tests it was easily the best 4K screen we have seen for gaming."
