ROG Crosshair VI Hero AMD X370 (Socket AM4) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

Extensively-Featured X370 Motherboard (ATX) from ASUS, 2× PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16/x8) / 1× PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4), 1× M.2 & 8× SATA 6G, 3x USB 3.1 / 10× USB 3.0 / 6× USB 2.0, max. 64 GB RAM at 2.666 MHz, ASUS Aura RGB-LED Lighting Motherboards with the AM4 socket serve as the platform for the AMD Ryzen (Summit Ridge) quad-core, hexa-core and octa-core CPUs as well as "Bristol Ridge" and "Raven Ridge" desktop APUs from the A-series with integrated GPUs unlike the old Athlon X4 which came without an iGPU. The advanced AMX X370, B350 and A320 chipsets are aimed at the enthusiast, mainstream and entry-level segments coming with an abundance of modern I/O interfaces and connectors for hardware peripherals, while additional data links are provided by the GPU/APU.

AMD Logo The processor's integrated memory controller supports AM4 motherboards as well as fast and energy- efficient DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode, as well as specialist ECC error-correcting memory depending on the motherboard. The advanced "Zen" microarchitecture in conjunction with the AM4 platform forms the perfect foundation for high-performance systems in a range of applications.

The Layout of the ATX-Format ASUS Crosshair VI Hero

The ASUS Crosshair VI Hero is a motherboard utilising the ATX format and comes with a lightning-fast 16x PCI-Express 3.0 slot as well as an 8x PCI-Express 3.0 slot. Furthermore a PCIe 2.0 slot with a x4 interface as well as two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots for compatibility with additional expansion cards. The four RAM slots accept up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM at a speed of 2.666 Megahertz. The range of internal connectors include a header for USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 with two ports each as well as a header for USB 3.1 for an additional connection.

Special Features at a Glance:

  • 2x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16/x8) for high-end gaming graphics cards
  • 3x USB 3.1 / 10x USB 3.0 / 6x USB 2.0
  • 8x SATA 6G / 1x M.2 Slot PCIe 3.0 x3
  • 2x Water pumps- & 5x PWM fan connectors (4-pin)
  • DDR4-RAM up to 2.666 MHz
  • ASUS Aura RGB-LED lighting
  • Modern UEFI-BIOS including temperature monitoring

Data storage devices such as SSDs and hard drives are managed via eight SATA 6G connectors (incl. RAID support) as well as a horizontal M.2 slot which is connected via four PCI-Express 3.0 lanes and, consequently, reaches extremely high speeds of up to 32 Gbit/s. M.2-SSDs measuring from 42 mm to 110 mm in length can be used and furthermore the cutting-edge NVM-Express protocol to take advantage of the parallel processing utilised by modern PCIe SSDs.

A further highlight of the ASUS Crosshair VI Hero is to be found on the reverse of the motherboards, specifically the fact that the motherboard includes a USB 3.1 Type C port and a USB 3.1 port with a Type A connector. This new kind of USB Type C port is particularly slim and allows connectors to be inserted in either direction. USB 3.1 or USB 3.1 Gen 2 can reach speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s per port. One unique feature includes the integrated ASUS "Aura" RGB-LED lighting that provides lighting effects on the I/O cover as well as the chipset heatsink, enabling even customisable effects in a multitude of colours that can be controlled by software.

Further highlights of the ASUS Crosshair VI Hero include Sonic Studio 3 for optimal sound management, the stylish ROG design with lighting and the advanced BIOS with great overclocking potential. Last but not least the motherboard provides connectivity for five 4-pin PWM fans as well as two pumps for water cooling. An I/O shield is located on the rear of the mainboard to provide access to further devices and components via USB 3.1, USB 3.0 and 2.0, Gigabit LAN or five audio jacks for connecting 7.1 surround sound to the ASUS Crosshair VI Hero.

Compatibility Note for CPU Coolers Utilising AMD Socket AM4:

Due to the revision in mounting hole distances for the new AM4 socket, CPU coolers with rear mounts will - compared with preceding sockets e.g. AM2(+), AM3(+) or FM2(+) - require AM4-compatible mounting brackets. Please ensure compatibility prior to purchasing. CPU coolers that are attached directly to the retention bracket of the motherboard retain compatibility.

Overall an excellent board, feature packed and with the latest BIOSes runs well with Corsair RAM at 3200Mhz.
One negative thing of note is that ASUS advertise surround sound yet the official drivers don’t do any surround sound or pass through so it’s fake advertising. Have to get unofficial drivers if you want the SPDIF to output DD or DTS.

Drips in quality

This board is simply great, excellent support for various fan, storage and gpu options along with amazing USB connectivity in the back.

You will need to update the bios when you get this which was pretty easy to do (plenty of guides out there).

Ram support was good, managed to get my 8pck team group dark kit to 3600mhz, so pretty happy. My 1700 CPU is sitting at 3.88ghz which was also pretty straight forward with he many tinkering options asus gives you.

Onboard effects are pretty cool, but if you are going on LED looks there are better boards.

Audio is insane compared to my last system (AM3 Asrock 990 rev2.0)

Paying the extra in my opinion is worth it, if your intent to push your CPU a little and your ram a little more.

BUT...and a big but.....the SLI seems very buggy right now with constant crashing which seems to be common across the AM4 range (hopefully a fix in the works). So if you don't want to SLI and perhaps want minimal OC options a B350 board is probably better.

Asus are a little slower on the mark with BIO updates so bare that in mind.

If you want the performance and your wallet is a bit fatter than usual then I would say invest in this board, it built to last and looks great.

One of the best supported AM4

As with any new platform, there are teething problems. I flashed to the latest beta bios (1001) and so far the AM4 ASUS Crosshair is living up to my expectations.

The advantage with this board is the large user group, many of which are enthusiast overclockers and therefore the support is very good, not only from ASUS but the aforementioned enthusiasts.

The board is classy and has a top notch bios for tweaking, much like previous Crosshair versions.

It will allow earlier coolers to be recycled onto the platform possibly saving £50-100 on competitors. You will need to obtain an AM3 backplate to do this.

Performance is good. Competent power delivery and good thermal control are in evidence. Audio is also good and the apps and drivers up to the mark.

This board may last a few years with support and my intention is to do just that. I believe it is worth the premium pricing above most other boards for these reasons.
