Asus Nightmare Pt II

I ended up RMA the 1st unit, and the replacement I received is working perfectly (except for the overclocking button but more on that shortly), I installed the unit (didn't do any cable management incase it had to come out again), downloaded the latest drivers from Asus's website (Latest Intel MEI is needed), and cheated to install, I copied the DVD to desktop then replaced the drivers and programs with the latest downloads, then ran the setup program so it did it all for me, after the initial reboot, I installed the updated AI suite 3 that is modified with some driver support for the FB unit, then rebooted computer once more.

I was over joyed that the controller actually worked!!, the difference between the old unit and this 1 was the sticker was inverted colours to the original, the 1st was black with white writing, the replacement was white with black writing, now not sure if this is significant eg, different assembly line or production factory etc, but it seemed to be the only difference there was between the units.

Still no joy with the replacement AAFP cable though, so today I called OCUK tech support up to see if they had heard anything or got any replies from them chasing up the Asus rep about these, and there was nothing that they had heard back from them, in the meantime between then and now, I have managed to dig up the replacement cables part number, so when I spoke to them today, I briefly filled him in with the problem, and how the USA is getting this replacement part, and how Asus tech support is unfortunately telling me where to go, and that it is OCUK's responsibility to get this part (sounds to me like passing the buck!!), anyway, the operator / tech support person was really helpfull and checked all the notes on this, and took down the part number, so now hopefully when the buyers or the tech support people themselves contact Asus (as they will have access to reps and other people we don't) they can now present them with the part number and that way all they need to do th!
en is arrange getting some supplied to OCUK and then sent out to those who need them (as originally mentioned, not everybody will).

So to sum it all up, the FB unit itself is definately a 4* unit, if it wasn't for the audio cable issue, it would have gotten the 4 or maybe even 5 stars!! but to update the above review, there are units out there which do work with the Z97 chipset, as advertised, but the AAFP is only issue. The overclock button is to do with the profiles in bios now I think, if it wasn't for the fact of me running a 4790K cpu which is faster than the overclock speeds, then there wouldn't be a problem with this also, it is just conflicting information it is trying to sort through which why it freezes the computer.

Hope this update helps people decide whether to get one of these units or not, as I am now happy with the working one.

Asus Nightmare

Having bought one of these to go in the latest rig I have built, I am starting to regret it and deciding whether to send it back for a refund or not.

The included AAFP (front panel audio cable) included, if you have a Corsair Obsidian 750D or a case of the same sort of size or bigger, then the cable is too short to be routed around the back of the motherboard with all the other cables.

Having contacted Asus Tech support after researching, they should be able to send you out a longer cable, all good?? NO, it seems only the American market are getting this at the moment, it has taken me nearly 10 days so far to get Asus UK Tech team to even look into the idea of getting a replacement cable, this is after threatening to go to Trading Standards. VERY POOR SHOW FROM ASUS ON THIS, especially as the quality of their products is supposed to be really good, let alone this being a ROG product which is their top tier line.

There are also issues with the Z97 chipset.

My Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero and this don't like playing together nicely, the fan controller doesn't control the fans, the overclock button freezes your computer and are forced to hard reset via power switch, and when trying to update the firmware as suggested on the ROG forums ( it fails, but the Front Base still remains as it was prior to trying.

It does actually report the cpu speed, the fan speed, and cpu speed, but other than that, the only other benefit is a clock and extra usb 2.0 port.

There are no issues with the z96 chipset with its functions, and yes I have tried updated drivers, clean installs, resetting bios, and bios updates on motherboard, and everything else that is on the ROG forums.

It is a very good product if you have the right hardware, but the struggles with the newer hardware, (although it probably just needs some updates) is very trying, and I am in no way a novice when it comes to computers.

Hope this helps some people.
