Product information: ROG Strix Z270F Gaming Intel Z270 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

Z270 Motherboard (ATX) for Gamers, with 3× PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16/x8/x4), 2× USB 3.1 (1x Type A & 1x Type C), 2× M.2 (PCIe 3.0 x4) & 6x SATA 6G, 6× USB 3.0 and ac-WiFi, 2× RGB-LED Headers & ASUS Aura RGB LEDs The ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming is an ATX motherboard utilising Intel's Z270 chipset for Intel processors from the 6th ("Skylake") and 7th ("Kaby Lake") generations on socket LGA 1151. The chipsets from the 200 series, known as "Union Point", come with up to 24 PCIe Express 3.0 lanes and bring more overall HSIO lanes (High Speed I/O) as well, thereby enabling more internal connections (such as SATA or PCIe slots) to be used simultaneously. As a Z270 motherboard, the ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming enables overclocking of K-series CPUs, which offer completely unlocked multipliers.

The Features of the ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming - An Overview:

  • 3× PCIe (3.0) x16 (16/8/4) & 4× PCIe (3.0) x1
  • 2× USB 3.1 (Type A & Type C) / 6× USB 3.0
  • 2× M.2 (PCIe 3.0 x4) / 6× SATA 6G
  • Supports up to 64 GB DDR4-RAM at 3.866 MHz
  • Includes ac-WiFi Module and Antennae
  • ASUS AURA RGB-LED Lighting
  • Expandable via RGB-LED Header (4-Pin)
  • CPU Overclocking via Multiplier & Baseclock

The ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming in Detail

The ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming is a very well-featured ATX motherboard with Intel's Z270 chipset offering compatibility with Intel's processors from the 6000 and 7000 series. This black-themed board comes with two PCIe-x16 slots, of which one is connected with a full 16 lanes to the chipset, while the others are connected electrically i.e via four data lines each. For I/O options and expansion cards the board comes with four further PCIe x1 slots and supports NVIDIA's SLI and AMD's CrossFireX technology.

The motherboard provides DDR4 RAM compatibility over 4 DIMM slots in ultra-fast dual-channel mode. The memory banks take up to 64 GB RAM and, depending on the processor installed, supports memory clocks of either 2.133 MHz (with Skylake CPUs) or 2.400 MHz (with Kaby Lake CPUs), and overclocking also allows memory modules rated at speeds of up to 3.866 MHz.

In order to connect the very fastest data storage devices, the board comes with two M.2 slots for extreme NVMe M.2 SSDs, as well as six SATA 6G ports for 3,5" or 2,5" hard drives and SSDs (including RAID support). The M.2 ports are connected via four PCIe lanes on the 3.0 standard to the chipset and, in combination with the NVMe protocol, enable a data transfer rate of almost 4 GB/s. This allows M.2 PCIe SSDs to function up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs! Featured among the unique features of the ASUS STRIX Z270E is the ASUS Aura RGB-LED lighting and two headers for RGB-LED strips.

The I/O panel of this motherboard offers connectivity to the new USB specification, USB Type C, a port with a new slim profile and the ability to be plugged in either way. Apart from the Type C port the motherboard also offers backwards compatibility with USB 3.1 Type A. USB 3.1 ports are rated for a maximum achievable throughput of 10 Gbit/s, twice as fast as traditional USB 3.0 ports! As far as input devices and other gaming peripherals are concerned, the I/O panel also offers four USB 3.0 ports.

Besides the Gigabit LAN port the board comes with a WiFi-Module that even supports the fast ac-standard. If no graphics card is available, the integrated GPU on the Skylake or Kaby Lake CPU allows for monitors to be connected directly to the rear of the motherboard – HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI are available.

Internally the motherboard offers - among other functions - a Clear CMOS Jumper, a TMP header, four 4- pin headers for PWM fans, a 4-pin pump header, a header for temperature sensors as well as XMP support and an array of overclocking features.

ok

This board is well laid out, although I feel there could be more USB sockets on the back. There is room.
I've only been testing for a few days and have found that not all the PCI sockets work.

I have a TBS quad-tuner and an Hauppauge 2210 tuner card. I put the TBS card on the top slot, then the video card, and 2 slots down there is another small PCI slot in front of a full-size one at the bottom.

This slot doesn't work at all, not really too much of an issue as I just put it in the bottom one.

I don't know whether this is a one-off problem or if it is more widespread, time will tell.
