Strix X299-E Gaming (Socket 2066) Intel X299 ATX MotherboardThe ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING from ASUS represents the cutting-edge of the ROG line up for high-end Intel processors from the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X generations that work with the X299 chipset and require a LGA 2066 socket. This chipset, codenamed "Lewisburg", makes for a robust contender thanks to its up to 30 HSIO lanes (High-Speed Input/Output) as well as the maximum of 24 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes. As such this motherboard represents a powerful platform enabling the use of multiple internal ports simultaneously.
ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING Motherboard at a Glance:
- 3× PCIe (3.0) x16 (2× x16 / 1× x8)
- 3× USB 3.1 (1× Type-C / 2× Type-A)
- 8× USB 3.0 (4× Type-A / 4× internal) & 4× USB 2.0 (2× Type-A / 2× internal)
- 2× M.2 (PCIe 3.0 x4) / 8× SATA 6G
- 8× DIMM-Slots for DDR4-RAM (max. 128 GB with 28 or. 44 lane CPU)

The ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING in DetailThe ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING is a well-equipped and robust motherboard in the ATX-Format. It is designed for power users and case modders wanting an X299 and Skylake-X or Kaby Lake X pairing. The extremely stylish black board comes with three PCIe-x16 slots, of which two are equipped with the full 16 lanes to the chipset and one is connected electrically via eight data lines. This allows the use of a 28 or 44 lane CPU with NVIDIA 3-Way-SLI or AMD 3-Way-CrossFireX configurations .
Equipped with a total of eight DIMM-Slots for DDR4 RAM,a CPU with 28 or 44 data lines can operate all slots in Quad-Channel mode with up to a maximum capacity of 128 GB of memory. A CPU with 16 lanes supports Dual-Channel mode over four slots with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. Officially DDR4 modules can be used at up to 2.666 MHz, and clockspeeds of up to 4.133 MHz after overclocking!
The board comes with an extensive array of data storage options including two M.2 slots for ultra-fast NVMe M.2 SSDs as well as eight SATA 6G connectors for 3,5" or 2,5" hard drives and SSDs (incl. RAID support). The M.2 ports are connected to the chipset via four PCIe 3.0 lanes and this enables, in combination with the NVMe protocol, a data transfer rate of almost 4 GB/s. This results in M.2 PCIe SSDs functioning up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!
External ConnectorsThe I/O bracket of this performance-oriented motherboard comes with various useful ports to make life easier for users. Besides the new USB 3.1 Type-C port, which is particularly slim and can finally be inserted in either orientation, the board also comes with a further backwards compatible USB 3.1 port. Thanks to the ASMedia 3142 USB 3.1 controller speeds of up to 16 Gbit/s can be reached, three times as fast as earlier USB 3.0 ports. Naturally the board provides an additional four USB 3.0 and and two USB 2.0 ports.
For unhindered network connectivity the ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING also comes with an Intel Gigabit LAN port and fast wireless AC with two antenna ports for a lag-free gaming experience. The SupremeFX S1220 codec allows for incredible sound quality along with five gold-plated audio ports which are supplemented by an optical S/PDIF out. A USB 2.0 port can also be used as a BIOS flashback option.
Additional FeaturesCounting among the unique features offered by the ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING is the extensive RGB-LED lighting thanks to ASUS' Aura Sync. Aside from two lighting zones directly on the board, several LED strips can also be connected and controlled via the Aura Sync software.
