Xonar DX 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card (90-YAA060-1UAN0BZ)

With the introduction of Windows Vista, the whole audio architecture landscape has been changed. This has resulted in teething problems for gamers - with the possibility of losing all surround sound or hardware accelerated Direct3D and EAX while gaming in the Windows Vista environment. To circumvent this problem, the Asus Xonar family of audio cards utilizes an Asus exclusive technology - the new DS3D GX extension in the Xonar DX driver; to provide full support for surround sound and hardware accelerated features by translating DirectX to the DS3D GX. While other solutions like OpenAL requires special installation and game support, DS3D GX doesn't. Gamers can enjoy DirectX gaming with hardware enhanced surround sound and EAX effects automatically and immediately after installation. Asus Xonar DX audio card, dedicated to be the best audio card for gaming and home entertainment, provides unprecedented 116dB In/Out SNR audio quality and features for games, music, and movies. Combining 192k/24bit ultra fidelity input and output at with a suite of Dolby and DTS sound technologies and abundant valuable software, the Xonar DX is well designed to upgrade your PC to a powerful and high-quality Home Entertainment Centre, which you will never have with onboard audio or other sound cards.

- Vista Gaming with DirectSound & EAX support

If you were like me, still running your built in motherboard sound and thinking "how much better can these sound cards really be?" then stop thinking that immediately and hit the buy now button!

The difference is truly outstanding, especially for gaming in 7.1 with Dolby Digital Live (the main reason I purchased the card). I was not expecting such a vast improvement from what I would call a "mid-range" product for this market.

To sum it all up, money well spent :)

Excellent Hardware - TERRIBLE software

I had owned previously the D1 (PCI variant) of the DX for over 2 years, and it ran without any faults.

Got the DX in, and it was easy to install, and put in the front panel audio plug.
The PCI-E DX needs power though, which it comes with an included adapter.
Problem is, that the plug doesn't feel securely in place.

Apart from that, the hardware was great, it gave good sound quality, and EQ functionalities for my rig, just like the D1 did.

However, getting there was a real pain.
The software included with the DX and even the online drivers/software on ASUS's official site were shockingly bad.
I had no sound, nothing working on the Xonar utility, and often a grey screen in the utility (I'm running 64bit Win7).

Anyway - was about to give up and return this product, due to ASUS being absolutely terrible when it comes to software support, until I found the Unified software - which not only worked, but worked better than my old D1 utility.
Overall, bad software, great hardware = 4/5

Good quality sound

The sound is very good quality and is an improvement over onboard.

Easy to install and drivers where OK but download the latest ones from the Asus website.

You need a 3 pin floppy power connector BUT a adapter comes with the sound card! I bought a convertor not knowing it already comes with a 4 pin molex convertor.

If you want a sound card with good quality sound and would last for many years, this one would be my pick

Pretty Good!

If your looking for good sound, look no further!
im using this with Denon ah-d1100's and the sound is a massive improvement over the standard audio on an ASUS z68V-PRO.
It's so much more open sounding, and doesn't sound compressed/ 'tinny'
I haven't tested this on my Hi-Fi yet, but by the sounds of it ( :P ) there will be impressive amounts of quality!

Better than Onboard

Bought this to improve on onboard sound. Found the sound quality is much better and when gaming the 5.1 positional sound is alot more accurate than the onboard was.

Not an essential upgrade but well worth the money and easy to install.

Great product

Got this yesterday. I am well impressed with it. Miles better than onboard audio.

Amazing product. Installed it this morning, fiddled with the software a bit to find the best settings, launched up Bad Company 2, and I was blown away. Great quality, Footsteps were really clear. Combined with a Siberia V2 headset, it was just awesome.

If you are looking for a decently priced sound card, this is for you, especially for gaming!

Oh my god!

I am gobsmacked. I had a feeling that the motherboard sound card was a little weak but I have never heard such a great sound.

Have to watch all those MKV videos again and listen to my music collection. The sound is so clear.

I wonder what a good set of headphones will do for this card?

I got this for music really, I have my PC hooked up to a Hi-Fi amp and speakers and the improvement over my onboard sound (Realtek ALC889) is huge with this card.

According to all the reviews I read, this is the card to go for for music, being a stripped down D2X (the audiophiles favourite) and I am not disappointed

Great Card

Fantastic quality I can now get much more out of my headphones, Audio Technica AD700.
Very Happy!

This sound card did not work with my PC at all. I tried it in several different PCIE slots but it always caused conflicts with other hardware. i spent hours trying to get it configured but I never even got the driver installed. It may be that my card was defective in which case my review is quite harsh but looking on the interweb it appears that lots of others are having problems with this card too.

Xonar DX

Fantastic product. It looks even better in the flesh than the pics suggest. Accepted the wired connections and slotted straight in to the motherboard. The only slight problem was the PC freezing when I tried to install the drivers and software (conflict with my AV I think) but installing the driver from the 'found new hardware' wizard then running the CD worked.

And then there's the sound. Used for stereo music only, it is just amazing. Clear and musical. Even better than I had hoped for. I don't 'game' so I cant comment on its ability there.

If you are in the market for a PCI-E soundcard, and this is in your price range, why are you still reading this BUY IT!

Xonar DX

This is far better than my onboard sound. Coupled with a Sennheiser PC350 headset and Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II speakers the sound is far clearer. You could easily spend a good few hours tweaking too, via the Xonar audio center. Gonna drive missus nuts blasting music out now!
