Getting Better!

I'm the first person who initially reviewed this product and gave it three stars. The other person who has indicated my lack of knowledge/not knowing of NAS boxes. I work in IT day in day out and support servers, PC's etc and other peoples NAS boxes. Amongst these are more superior products such as Thecus aswell. So believe my review prove some worth seeing as there one was placed 8 months after mine and since then many of the software bugs have finally been resolved by Asustor.

The issue with raid building was not that I was impatient. Leaving the system 24 hours to build a raid 1 is more than sufficient and the process did not even begin even though it said it had and this was on the old ADM software which had issues.

Asustor have recently released many ADM (the software the box runs on) patches which I was pleased about, there has currently been about 4 in the past 1-2 months. This has addressed many of my concerns with the product and I'm starting to become more pleased with my initial disaster purchase. I only have two points I can flaw this device on currently which is the following:

A: The harddrives do make some noise from time to time from the harddrives vibrating, no matter how I place the drives, switch them over etc the sound reappears. This seems to be due to how the HDD caddy's have been built which could do with minor improvements. I have resorted to dampening the vibration with foam pads on the inside and this has fixed the issue.

B: MP4 files being played through Plex will randomly stop and close. Although this maybe a Plex issue and not Asustor it is somewhat annoying. I have yet to troubleshoot the cause of this fault though.

Asustor 302T NAS

As with the review above I have the agree with build quality etc as being perfect but for someone who is in IT I think they are a little delusional as to how a NAS works and how the software is etc. As I have had Synology and QNAP before I can say that this is literally no different. the software looks different but the basic principles and usability are near identical.

The NAS builds the raid but allows you to do what you want whilst this happens. This isn't an instant process and ASUSTOR should probably lock the system down whilst this happens otherwise you will get IT technicians trying to use an unconfirmed device - a wise move if you want to mess about setting the raid up numerous time, not so much if like me you only want to do it the once!

The software is a little sparse but it is a new brand. New programs are being added all the time, this takes time and sinology an QNAP have had this time already. The fact it has HDMI and can run XBMC out of the box is a massive bonus as it means you can remove your media centre PC from under the TV as this has the facility to play all of your films and music without the need for an additional PC unit.

it has all of the usual dnla and wireless functions that sinology and QNAP has but for the price has a spec far beyond that of the sinology and QNAP offering 1GB of ram rather than the 512MB you get from the competition and a dual core Aton rather than a woeful 800MHZ ARM chip or some sort.

If your in IT and you have the skills of the previous review avoid this product, buy an externl HDD and use USB. If your not in IT and reply on common sense and patience like the rest of the world this this is a truly perfect example of how a finished product should come packaged.

Having 4 CCTV licenses as standard rather than the sinology 1 and the QNAP 2 which in turn cost about

Expensive for flawed software

This is my first NAS and to be perfectly honest I'm not that impressed. I work in IT and have a pretty good knowledge of how things function as I provide network support etc and have been doing so for 11 months or so on a commercial level.

Setting up Raid one with two 3tb WD red drives did not work via the software, I had to keep refreshing the page/insert the additional drive with the system running to get it to even detect the drives/build the raid properly.
The first few times it would just refuse to build the array unless I kept going through the setup process multiple times. Each time you'd have to start from scratch and re enter all the details.
The instructions for this were not particularly clear and had to google around to see how to find out if it was building the array/not.
Asustor Support is quick to respond and helpful but couldn't help me with the issue above and I had to figure it out myself!

The UPNP they have does not work well at all and settled for plex instead which works.
Streaming files above 1gb on plex causes constant freezing video/audio which is a massive pain.
I've noticed many bugs in the software which I have reported to Asustor and they said they will be working to address these in the next update.

Does not work with Vista properly if you want to map the shared folders/user drives which are user protected it just fails to connect so that user on the system is unable to access anything that isn't public.
Not viewable on the network at all and they are not planning to make this a function, you have to access it via entering the IP manually everytime if you want to view all shares.

The build quality is fantastic, the software is majorely flawed and for the price I'm extremely disappointed.
I have given this 3 starts instead of 2 as the system works on W7/W8.1 and am able to access this remotely anywhere with Myasustor. Next time I'll be buying Drobo/Synology!
