Quiet and stable power supply

To begin, I will declare an interest, the be quiet Pure Power 9 500w 80+ was supplied from OCUK as a test item for review and these are my impressions from a short period of testing.
The unit looks impressive and is the same size as my Seasonic x650 gold. It is a part modular PSU with the two 12V cables fixed into the unit and sheathed with black plastic plug terminations. The cable lengths are adequate for a midi case although to hide the 8 pin cable, it may require extending to go behind the motherboard.
Three modular drive cables are supplied and these will accommodate SATA drives, at least two per cable and also have a standard molex (HDD) or floppy drive power connector on each cable. These cables are flat ribbon style and are flexible enough for awkward routings and close spaced drives.
Two modular PCIe 6+2 cables are supplied which allow one or two GPU's to be powered depending on their requirements. This PSU is aimed at the single GPU market in my opinion mainly due to the headline rating however two low TDP cards may be possible.
In use the PSU is fairly impressive due to not being audible above the background noise from slow spinning case fans. I have no disk noise as all are SSD in my case.
The testing system is an AMD FX9590 CPU and an AMD HD7870 GHz edition GPU neither of which are in the low power category. The most onerous test I have carried out previously on my Seasonic x650 was using 'Luxmark' on both the CPU and GPU which delivered 460w at the wall or probably 370w in the PSU
The be quiet Pure Power 9 500w silver was able to complete this test albeit with some ramping up of the fan noise. This was not unpleasant, just an audible hum and whoosh. No whining coils or squeals as may be expected at high loads.
In summary: It looks nice and would complement an orange scheme with the bezel around the fan although this would be hidden with the fan pointing down. It performs well at close to its rated capacity, is not obtrusive. The cables are long enough and can be hidden with some thought and planning.
I would recommend it for the majority of users who do not massively overclock and have AMD or Intel single GPU requirements.

Good quiet semi-modular option

Received one of these free for review. BeQuiet and OcUK kindly gave out twenty of these which was not only very nice of them but I feel also shows they believe this product deserves more exposure and consideration among PC hardware buyers.

Was not disappointed. The cables are all black, no coloured wires to be seen anywhere, and the modular ribbon cables were not stiff and were easy to work with. Cable-length was very good, had no trouble reaching the DVD drive located in the top optical bay of my NZXT Phantom 820 which is categorized as an Ultra Tower.

Apart from the non-modular round braided black 24-pin ATX and 8-pin (4+4) EPU cables, there are 5 modular ribbon black cables: 2 x PCI-E 6+2-pins, 1 x 3 SATA, 1 x 2 Sata + 1 Molex + 1 Berg, and 1 x 1 Sata + 2 Molex.

The other accessories were a manual, five screws and five zip-ties.

Once installed, I ran several loops of Unigine Valley and RealBench at the same time to stress the i7-4700K CPU and GTX 970 GPU, both of which are overclocked, and thereby provide a nice test for this power supply, which provides 40 amps/480W on the 12v rails.

It didn't seem to break a sweat and I never heard the PSU fan, which is one of BeQuiet's own models.

Having looked at the competiton and current prices, just before writing this review, it does look like a competitive option to consider if you want modularity and quiet.

I'm giving it a 9/10 because there are slightly cheaper Gold efficiency power supplies (most not modular to be fair) with 5 years warranty, instead of the 3 years this Silver one carries. I feel it would be even more competitive and get included in more hardware spec suggestions if it carried 5 years. It would probably pick itself then, in a lot of specs.

Good silent psu

Packaging is minimal. Inside the box the power supply is just wrapped in bubble wrap and has a piece of card over it, but it does seem to be sufficient to protect it.

Unit itself is well built. Nicely finished, no sharp edges or blemishes on it. The orange ring surrounding the fan is a nice touch and adds a bit of colour without being over the top.

Supply is very quiet, even under a heavy load the fan remains silent and there's been no noticeable whine from the unit.

The main power connectors are as expected braided, but still fairly flexible even around the 24 pin connector. The modular cables are not braided but are flat ribbon types, making them very easy to manage and get hidden behind the motherboard tray. One of the SATA strings has a single molex on it, which is nice as you don't have to run a whole string of molex connectors just for one item in the case. On the unit itself, the sockets for sata/molex power are a single straight line, rather than being arrange in a block, which is unusual, but are still very secure and very easy to insert and remove.

Only negative I had with this supply, was I found the mounting screws provided to be soft compared to others, and quite easy to damage the heads if not careful.

Overall, it's a good silent supply with some nice designs choices.
