Way back at CompuTex 2023, we first got a glimpse of the ASUS GPU prototype without 12VHPWR. After months of testing, ASUS has now officially revealed these brand-new graphics cards that feature virtually no cables but still deliver exceptional gaming performance.

If you’re looking to create a minimal aesthetic with no cable clutter, then keep on reading for all the details about these new graphics card, including the required hardware.

What is 12VHPWR?

The 12VHPWR cable is a type of 12+4-pin connector used with the latest generation of GPUs and ATX 3.0 power supplies. These have been designed to deliver up to 600W from one singular cable, whilst the combination of 12- and 4-pins help to improve its efficiency.

How Has ASUS Made a GPU Without 12VHPWR?

Whilst the 12VHPWR cable has been fine-tuned to meet the power demands of the latest GPUs, there have been reports of issues with the cable. However, ASUS has combated this with their invisible 12VHPWR connector.

To achieve this, these graphics cards utilise a 600W slot on a motherboard, called a HPCE (High Power Card Edge), instead of traditional PSU connectors. This custom motherboard slot serves as a passthrough for the 16-pin power cable running from the power supply. The connector will plug into the motherboard and then pass the power onto the GPU via a contract strip.

What Hardware Do I Need for These GPUs?

These cableless graphics cards are perfect for creating a clean cable-free look to your gaming PC. However, if you want to have one, you’ll also need to purchase a corresponding compatible motherboard. This is because a typical motherboard won’t feature the new 12VHPWR slot on the back and therefore you won’t be able to harness the invisible connector.

In addition to the 12VHPWR connector, these motherboards also feature integrated slots for the 24-, 8-, and 6-pin PSU connectors. Plus, the RGB, fan, USB, and SATA ports have all been moved to the back of the board.

What’s more, you’ll also need a motherboard tray with dedicated cutouts for all the connectors.

Both the cableless GPUs and required motherboards aren’t widely available yet. However, some manufacturers are beginning to create their own, including MSI Project Zero and Gigabyte’s Project Stealth.

Will You Be Utilising These GPUs Without 12VHPWR?

We can’t wait to see the stunning cableless PCs that can be created with these innovative GPUs.

Will you be utilising one in the future when they become readily available? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Such an excellent write-up and very informative for folks like that who have somewhat been out of the PC build market for a few years, thanks Ruth.
