How to Remove Thermal Paste

Thermal paste is the unsung hero of your cooling setup… until it dries out, turns crusty, and starts making your CPU overheat like a budget laptop running Cyberpunk 2077. Whether you’re upgrading your cooler, swapping out your CPU, or just doing some routine maintenance, we’ve got all the deets on how to remove old thermal paste.

How to Remove Thermal Paste

Do I Actually Need To Replace Thermal Paste?

Thermal paste’s job is to fill microscopic gaps between your CPU and cooler, ensuring efficient heat transfer. But over time, it can dry out, degrade, or just turn into an uneven mess. While it’s not necessarily crucial to replace your thermal paste on a regular schedule, we do recommend replacing it in these situations:

  • Upgrading Your CPU or Cooler – New parts deserve a fresh start.
  • Fixing a Bad Application – Used way too much paste last time? Let’s fix that.
  • Troubleshooting High Temps – If your system is running hotter than it should, fresh thermal paste could help bring those temps down.

How Do I Replace My Thermal Paste

Before we jump into actually replacing that sticky mess under your cooler, you’ll need to grab a couple of things.

  • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher is best)
  • Microfibre cloth or coffee filter (Paper towels leave lint—avoid them!)
  • Cotton swabs (For those tricky spots)
  • Plastic scraper (Optional, for stubborn paste)

Step 1: Power Down and Unplug Everything

Before you go anywhere near your CPU, shut down your PC and unplug it. You’ll also want to press the power button several times to ensure there is no residual power left.

Step 2: Remove the CPU Cooler

If your cooler doesn’t budge, don’t yank it—twist it gently side to side to break the seal. If you rip it straight off, you might pull your CPU out with it (which can be as bad as it sounds).

Step 3: Wipe Off the Bulk of the Paste

Use a dry microfibre cloth or coffee filter to wipe away most of the thermal paste from both the CPU and cooler base. If it’s dried on like cement, gently scrape it off with a plastic scraper tool.

Step 4: Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol

Dampen a microfibre cloth or cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe down the CPU heat spreader and cooler base until they’re squeaky clean. The Isopropyl will break down any stubborn paste.

Step 5: Let It Dry & Reapply

Make sure to give the Isopropyl a few moments to fully evaporate before you apply new thermal paste.

Time For A New Cooler?

If your temps have seen better days, maybe it’s time for a new CPU cooler. Overclockers UK has a huge range of air coolers, AIO coolers, and even everything you need for a full custom water-cooled loop! Of course, we also stock an enormous range of thermal paste.
