The Best Gaming Bonfires

Bonfire Night is here and that can only mean one thing. Well, two things… Autumn is in full swing and it’s time to get cosy and celebrate the only way we know how – playing some great games! To keep up with the festive spirit, it’s only fitting you play a game that features a bonfire (and maybe the occasional firework as a bonus).

If you’re racking your brain for games with bonfire, you’re in the right place. We’ve rounded up our top five gaming bonfires. All of which provide you with either vital in-game buffs, are pivotal in your survival, or maybe just add an extra element of fun to your gameplay.

Grab the marshmallows, a large hot chocolate (with cream and sprinkles, of course), and let’s get cosy with these bonfires.

Dark Souls

Dark Souls is a dark fantasy RPG in which you explore the vast and deadly world of Lodran. Cursed with the undead, you must embark on a life or death mission to uncover the truth behind this curse, find others who are afflicted, and discover the fate of the undead. On your journey, you must learn how to survive in Lodran. Travel across unforgiving landscapes, defeat powerful demons and dragons, and watch out for those murderous hidden traps!

Whilst the world of Lodran is deadly, bonfires are your salvation. They serve as checkpoints for players, offering you a chance to enjoy a peaceful respite as you replenish your health and Estus, along with allowing you to create a brand-new spawn point in the chance of an untimely death. However, it’s not quite time to whip out the marshmallows just yet for resting at a bonfire will respawn all nearby enemies and monsters…

Terraria

Terraria blends sandbox-style fun with a battle for survival. Explore a randomly generated world as you fight for your life, fortune, and glory. It’s entirely up to you how you do this. Will you choose to spend your time in cavernous expanses hunting for precious resources, conquer hordes of deadly bosses including a giant flying eye, or build a thriving city to home you and the various other mysterious characters you’ll encounter? The choice is yours.

In Terraria, a bonfire is a furniture item that can be crafted and placed around the world. It emits a beautiful glow of light to illuminate your surroundings and provides players with the Cozy Fire buff. This buff provides a health regeneration, but only if you are standing close by. Plus, for the ultimate Bonfire Night vibe, you can use your bonfire to cook a marshmallow on a stick. Just maybe don’t do this when you’re trying to fight the Eye of Cthulhu…

Don’t Starve

Don’t Starve is an epic wilderness survival game in which you play as Wilson, a Gentleman Scientist, who has been trapped by a demon. After being transported to a mysterious world, you must learn how to utilise this unknown environment and its inhabitants to your advantage. Especially if you ever want to find your way home. Gather precious resources, craft items, and defend yourself against strange dangers as you unravel the mysteries of the wilderness.

Similar to Terraria, the bonfire in Don’t Starve is a craftable item that provides light, heat, and allows you to cook food. All of which are key to your survival in the wild. As you venture outside of your base, crafting a bonfire provides you with vital warmth to keep you alive, even without any additional clothing. Adding extra fuel such as logs or cut grass will increase the duration of the fire, but be warned… In the forest biome, adding too much fuel can result in a forest fire!

Stardew Valley

Now it wouldn’t be an Overclockers UK blog post if we didn’t mention Stardew Valley. Between me and Emily, this game is definitely a favourite in the office! Stardew Valley transports you to the idyllic Pelican Town to restart your life as a farmer on your Grandpa’s old farm. Work hard and learn how to live off the land as you transform overgrown fields into lush crops and thriving fields for animals. To be successful, you’ll need to hunt down resources for crafting through foraging, fishing, and even venturing deep into the mines.

Stardew Valley features both a craftable Bonfire and Cookout Kit. Our fave in this blog post is the Cookout Kit. This handy item was added in the 1.5 update and allows players to cook delicious items outside of their farmhouse. I know right? Trying to complete the full cooking list for Perfection? Do it on the go! Ran out of food in the Skull Caverns right before level 100? Whip out the trusty Cookout Kit and make your spicy eel. What’s more, in Stardew Valley you can celebrate Bonfire Night in style, especially after the addition of Fireworks in the 1.6 update!

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is an epic action-adventure game in which you can forge your own path and wage war to earn Tsushima its freedom. Play as Jin, a warrior trained in the way of a samurai as you explore a vibrant feudal Japan rife with conflict. On your journey to reclaim Tsushima, harness your powerful abilities and unlikely allies to protect your home at all costs.

Bonfires play a vital part in The Undying Flame quest, one of the seven Mythic Tales. You must complete this Mythic Tale to earn the Way of the Flame ability to ignite your blade. Think of the marshmallows you could toast with that! As you venture further up Mount Jogaku, you’ll need to ensure you don’t wander too far from the fire. If you do, you’ll soon quickly start to freeze, lose health, and eventually die. To successfully ascend the mountain, utilise the cluster of fires at each camp to warm up before you carefully progress to the next one until you reach the summit.

Honourable Mention

One that didn’t make our top five list, but we felt it deserved a mention, was The Sims. This fan-favourite life sim includes everything you need to create the ultimate Bonfire Night celebration, especially if you have the Seasons expansion pack.

With Seasons you can create your very own custom seasonal holidays and traditions which determine how your Sims celebrate. For my in-game Bonfire Night holiday, I like to select Fire, Fireworks, Mischief Spirit, along with Party Spirit. All of which are sure to result in a night of autumnal fun and perhaps even a sprinkle of chaos. It wouldn’t be The Sims without it!
