What Type of Game is South Park: Snow Day?

South Park: Snow Day! is more akin to a team-based action game, rather than an RPG like the previous South Park Digital Studios titles, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole. You and up to three other players can battle it out with formidable foes, such as Kyle’s Druish Elves, with an arsenal of weapons including Dual Daggers, Sword and Shield, Bow and Arrows, or even a Magical Wand. All in a variety of 3D arenas. Yes that’s right, South Park has gone 3D again.

As the New Kid, explore many of the famous locations around South Park, such as the Cartmen’s Back Yard otherwise known as Kupa Keep, South Park Elementary, and Stark’s Pond. Each of these locations provides expansive arenas to fight in, tailored to suit a variety of play styles. Whether you prefer to get into the thick of the fray with your blades, sit back and snipe, or bombard your foes from on high, these arenas can facilitate all your tactics.

It’s not all about the action though, as the developers have also tapped their mobile game Phone Destroyer for inspiration. As you explore, you’ll occasionally find the Bard Jimmy, who will offer you a selection of cards to customise your abilities. Take, for example, Fart Escape. This can be upgraded to leave a toxic cloud behind to poison enemies. You can further enhance the power with a vacuum that draws foes in, thus increasing the spread of the poison debuff. There is a huge range of cards to choose from, letting you tailor the New Kid to your playstyle.

The Story of Snow Day

What kid doesn’t love a snow day? One less day of school! Cartman is no exception, sitting on tenterhooks for the news that the schools are closed. The world may be falling apart during an epic storm, all that matters is whether you the kids can skip a day, oh and having enough TP. Once he finally receives that all important news, he’s donning his Great Wizard garb and rushing out the door to get the kids together for a new game in the snow.

But there are new rules, because someone (not mentioning any names here, New Kid) ruined the fantasy game by getting too OP. The superhero game is also out, as someone was again too OP and farted us into last week. Instead, this time everyone is limited to just two abilities, one melee, and one ranged weapon. That’ll stop anyone being OP, right?

Once you’ve passed the tutorial, you need to choose a quest to partake in. The first of which has you go and battle the Elf King Kyle, and his Druish Elf hordes, who are amassing to attack Kupa Keep. Because Elves hate Humans, and Humans hate Elves, ok?

This is all carried out under strict new laws enforced by Butters the Keeper of the Rules. As such, before battle commences, Cartman and Kyle meet to set out what Bullshit can occur. Cartman can give you powerful abilities, like calling down meteors. Meanwhile, Kyle can make your life harder, including the ability to turn his Elves into Vampires. Defeat his minions and you’ll finally be able to battle Kyle. Take him down and you’ll have saved the kingdom… or have you?

Our Thoughts

If you’re a fan of South Park, you’ll love Snow Day. It maintains all the things we love, such as the crass humour and outlandish scenarios, whilst offering a well-tuned action game. Not everyone is a fan of the RPG genre, after all. The gameplay is excellent. It’s not super-fast-paced, so you don’t need the twitch reflexes of a first grader to get to grips with it, but it can easily get quite hectic when enemies are closing in. Furthermore, with the customisation possibilities, you can find a playstyle that suits you perfectly. This is an easily accessible game for many people.

The game looks great. The new art style may take a little time to get used to, as we’ve known these characters only in 2D for decades now, but South Park and its inhabitants look amazing. It’s great fun to explore the familiar locations of the town, just from a different perspective, and this time at least there are no turkeys to ruin the experience of playing a 3D South Park game! Moreover, the soundtrack matches the setting perfectly, with a fantasy score that reacts to the onscreen action. And of course, the show’s voice cast all return to reprise their iconic roles.

If you love the humour of the show, you’ll be happy to know it continues in South Park: Snow Day! with the writers taking the same jabs at anyone and everyone they can. The characters bounce off each other just like they do on TV, with Cartman and Kyle being the obvious highlight in the early game. But there are still points for others to shine, such as Jimmy cracking his standup routine. He caught me off guard with this one: Why do dragons not eat paladins? Because they taste lawful. Took me a minute to escape the facepalm I found myself in after hearing that.
