Whether you\u2019re upgrading your cooler, swapping out your CPU, or just doing some routine maintenance, we\u2019ve got all the deets on how to remove old thermal paste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I Actually Need To Replace Thermal Paste?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thermal paste\u2019s job is to fill microscopic gaps between your CPU and cooler, ensuring efficient heat transfer. But over time, it can dry out, degrade, or just turn into an uneven mess. While it\u2019s not necessarily crucial to replace your thermal paste on a regular schedule, we do recommend replacing it in these situations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Upgrading Your CPU or Cooler<\/strong> \u2013 New parts deserve a fresh start. <\/li>\n\n\n\n

    How Do I Replace My Thermal Paste\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Before we jump into actually replacing that sticky mess under your cooler, you\u2019ll need to grab a couple of things.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher is best) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Microfibre cloth or coffee filter (Paper towels leave lint\u2014avoid them!) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Cotton swabs (For those tricky spots) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Plastic scraper (Optional, for stubborn paste) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Step 1: Power Down and Unplug Everything <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Before you go anywhere near your CPU, shut down your PC and unplug it<\/strong>. You\u2019ll also want to press the power button several times to ensure there is no residual power left.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 2: Remove the CPU Cooler <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      If your cooler doesn\u2019t budge, don\u2019t yank it\u2014twist it gently side to side to break the seal. If you rip it straight off, you might pull your CPU out with it (which can be as bad as it sounds). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 3: Wipe Off the Bulk of the Paste <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Use a dry microfibre cloth or coffee filter to wipe away most of the thermal paste from both the CPU and cooler base. If it\u2019s dried on like cement, gently scrape it off with a plastic scraper tool.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 4: Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Dampen a microfibre cloth or cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe down the CPU heat spreader and cooler base until they\u2019re squeaky clean. The Isopropyl will break down any stubborn paste.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 5: Let It Dry & Reapply <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Make sure to give the Isopropyl a few moments to fully evaporate before you apply new thermal paste.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
