To better understand them, it’s worth briefly unpacking rasterisation. This was the core lighting technique in gaming for a long while. However, by today’s standards, the quality of its effects is considered rudimentary.

When rasterisation is used, many polygons come together to create 3D models in a scene. If they touch, they exchange a wealth of virtual data, including information about the colour and texture of the object. Rasterisation can convincingly light an area in-game, but the results are pretty surface-level.

Ray tracing and path tracing both build on rasterisation. The result is gaming scenes that are lit in a way that is more immersive and true-to-life for the player. It’s not just about lighting a surface, but also altering the way that surface behaves when lit.

Before we can fairly compare ray tracing and path tracing, we’re going to take a closer look at each rendering technique. While they both accurately light your gaming scenes, they have unique properties and capabilities that make them different.

Ray Tracing

Ray tracing is a series of rendering techniques that realistically simulate how light interacts with in-game surfaces. The result is glorious gaming visuals, with authentic shadows, refractions, and reflections!

When ray tracing is enabled, ray casting gets the ball rolling. From your in-game viewpoint, the algorithm casts one primary ray for each pixel on the screen. When that ray hits a surface, data is gathered on the distance of the pixel from the camera, along with its colour and brightness level. How light interacts with each visible object can then be calculated, and a ‘path of light’ can be simulated through the scene.

Technologies like the global illumination algorithm and the Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) data structure then kick into gear. The former helps light realistically reflect off objects, while the latter works to reduce the number of calculations for each ray and thereby accelerate the ray tracing process.

A spot of denoising caps everything off, refining the image further and eliminating grainy-looking pixels. As such, all ray-traced visuals seem like part of the world around you instead of a blocky afterthought.

<div class="wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

Path Tracing

Path tracing raises the bar a little higher. The technology is more powerful than any previous lighting effect that came before.

You may find some arguing that path tracing is still pretty much ray tracing. While these technologies share similar architectural foundations, it would be inaccurate to say they are identical. So, our stance is that ray tracing and path tracing are similar, but separate!

The main difference is that path tracing sends thousands of different rays per pixel. This gives it more data to pull from and more photorealistic graphics to display. As a result, path tracing simulates the real behaviour of light, from how it moves to the subtle colour transitions that can occur as it interacts with different surfaces.

Path tracing has come a long way. This technology used to be tailored to creatives overseeing long and arduous pre-rendering projects, and it relied on high-end professional CPUs to get it all done. Since that time, however, path tracing has been enhanced and applied to gaming GPUs. As a result, path tracing algorithms can be calculated in real-time, letting you enjoy incredible visuals as you play.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-63512"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-292x164.png 292w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-632x355.png 632w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-850x478.png 850w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-path-tracing-comparison-001-on-501x282.png 501w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Ray Tracing Hardware Requirements

To get the most out of ray tracing, you’ll need a solid PC build. It’s quite an intensive technology, and the results can be a spectrum depending on your computer’s configuration.

You’ll find that different video games have their own requirements for ray tracing, too. So, while we’ve provided a table below that broadly outlines minimum hardware requirements for ray tracing, it’s definitely worth checking your game’s official specifications for full assurances.

Minimum Hardware Requirements for Ray Tracing

NVIDIA RTX 20 Series or higher / AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series or higher

8GB RAM

Intel Core i5-12600K CPU or equivalent

If your gaming PC isn’t spec’d for optimal ray tracing results, you can tinker with in-game settings to score the best visuals possible. Remember, this isn’t just about how nice it looks, but how ray tracing affects your FPS, load times, and more!

To compensate for limited hardware, consider:

Closing any unrelated applications while you game.

Lowering your ray tracing settings, if possible. Some games allow you to toggle between Ultra, High, and Medium.

Lowering and capping your monitor’s frame rate.

Dropping DLSS or FSR settings down from Quality to Balanced or Performance.

Enabling any PC settings that optimise gameplay, e.g. Game Mode on Windows.

These measures should help if your gaming computer needs an extra push for the best possible ray tracing results. You’ve got options!

It’s also worth mentioning that some gamers try to dabble in multi-GPU scaling to give their graphics an uptick in performance. While it used to be a viable practice, it’s become relatively obsolete in PC gaming circles, and big-name manufacturers no longer support these configurations. Single GPU set-ups are the way to go.

Path Tracing Hardware Requirements

If you want your gaming PC to play harder with path tracing, you can expect it to work harder, too! There’s a lot more to get to grips with here.

Once again, these specs can vary between titles, so we recommend that you do your due diligence. However, the table below gives you a broad outline of the hardware your gaming PC might need for path tracing.

Minimum Hardware Requirements for Path Tracing

NVIDIA RTX 40 Series / AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series or higher

16GB RAM

Intel Core i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or higher

Keep your monitor resolutions in mind, too. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of 1080p gaming, but it is sure to detract from the visual feast that path tracing can provide.

What’s more, because path tracing is, let’s face it, a pretty luxurious bit of technology, there’s not much jiggery-pokery you can do to get it working if you’re not using powerful enough hardware. In fact, you may even find path tracing straight-up greyed out or missing from in-game settings menus if your PC build hasn’t got the sauce.

Plus, if you try to be cheeky with your path tracing settings, you can pretty quickly find that style starts to eclipse substance. Stuttering, tearing, and other symptoms of performance drops can soon follow. There’s a lot less flexibility here.

The Final Verdict

If you’re only interested in which tracing technology performs better and produces more realistic lighting effects, we can definitively state that path tracing is superior to ray tracing. However, tech is complicated, and that goes double, triple, or even quadruple for the lives of gamers!

If you’re a PC gamer on a budget, ray tracing is undoubtedly a better choice in that regard. You’ll still get to enjoy some gorgeous lighting effects, toy around with settings to optimise the visuals, and you won’t need to spend any more of your precious pennies!

Time to Enhance Your Visuals?

Whether you favour ray tracing or path tracing, one thing’s for sure: you’ll need a great gaming PC and a snazzy GPU to go with it! Here at Overclockers UK, we’ve got all the top-line tech that can deliver jaw-dropping visuals in all the latest games!

Shop Gaming PCs

Shop Graphics Cards

<img decoding="async" class="feed-product-image" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/dw/image/v2/BLRM_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-master-catalog-ocuk/default/dw8fd66395/images/data/product/c1/cd3375/4634e8cdf515b9dda395ffda98f7614c223440e5.jpg?sw=800" alt="OcUK Gaming Ultraviolet - GeForce RTX 5090 Pre-Built Gaming PC" / loading="lazy">

OcUK Gaming Ultraviolet – GeForce RTX 5090 Pre-Built Gaming PC

FS-1UV-EP

£7999.99 GBP

(incl.
