This graphical process has been around for a while, but as trends have changed and gaming requirements have developed,&nbsp;so, too,&nbsp;have the norms that come with them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To put it simply:&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;is a lighting technique. Imagine a&nbsp;cube,&nbsp;and light rays hitting that&nbsp;cube.&nbsp;Whatever&nbsp;the light highlights&nbsp;is&nbsp;what&nbsp;the&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;algorithm&nbsp;will&nbsp;process. In 3D shapes&nbsp;like this, there will be certain parts that&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;visible&nbsp;in&nbsp;2D, so&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;allows the&nbsp;processor to&nbsp;display&nbsp;what can be seen in&nbsp;greater&nbsp;detail,&nbsp;and&nbsp;ignore the parts that cannot be seen. This allows graphics to be processed&nbsp;faster,&nbsp;and&nbsp;for&nbsp;more power to be&nbsp;allocated&nbsp;to necessary visuals&nbsp;over those that&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;seen by&nbsp;the user.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;process is usually&nbsp;depicted&nbsp;using a grid,&nbsp;called a 2D screen. In this way, you can see how certain points from&nbsp;separate&nbsp;polygons can be mapped out and generated.&nbsp;As 3D shapes are perceived from different&nbsp;angles, their shape changes&nbsp;to the human eye. This is why the grid is&nbsp;often&nbsp;used to&nbsp;show&nbsp;the&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;process&nbsp;as we can see how&nbsp;3D&nbsp;shapes&nbsp;should&nbsp;look&nbsp;with lighting and shadow&nbsp;on a 2D&nbsp;display.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How\u00a0Rasterisation\u00a0Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&nbsp;are a few key stages to the&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;process.&nbsp;They are as follows:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vertex Processing: 3D scene data is transformed,\u00a0lit, and projected onto a 2D\u00a0grid.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Triangle Setup: The\u00a0shape\u2019s\u00a0intersections\u00a0are\u00a0assembled as\u00a0polygons to define the shapes\u00a0on the 2D grid.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rasterisation: The\u00a0rasterisation\u00a0algorithm\u00a0deciphers\u00a0which pixels on the screen are covered by the triangle. A pixel is\u00a0then\u00a0filled if its\u00a0centre\u00a0is inside the triangle.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pixel\u00a0Shading:\u00a0Colours, textures, and lighting effects are applied to the covered pixels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Output Merging: The renderer\u00a0processes\u00a0depth information,\u00a0also known as the Z-buffer,\u00a0ensuring that\u00a0closer objects cover distant ones\u00a0to\u00a0prevent\u00a0rendering\u00a0anomalies. Anti-aliasing\u00a0is then applied\u00a0to smooth\u00a0any\u00a0jagged edges.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These steps make up the&nbsp;rasterisation&nbsp;process.&nbsp;What the&nbsp;algorithm is outputting is the correct pixel colour,&nbsp;determined&nbsp;by the shape and the shadows it creates. For a pixel effected by shadow, a darker colour will be generated. If the&nbsp;pixel is in direct light, though, a much&nbsp;brighter&nbsp;colour will be generated.&nbsp;The colour of the&nbsp;pixel&nbsp;entirely depends&nbsp;on the shape&nbsp;being&nbsp;displayed, and in what lighting scenario it is&nbsp;situated&nbsp;in.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rasterisation\u00a0vs Ray Tracing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As modern technologies and tech requirements have evolved, so have&nbsp;the&nbsp;processes&nbsp;that come with them.&nbsp;Ray tracing, in this case, is mostly&nbsp;considered&nbsp;a step up from&nbsp;rasterisation.&nbsp;When&nbsp;processing&nbsp;light and shadow&nbsp;with ray tracing,&nbsp;light is&nbsp;physically&nbsp;simulated&nbsp;by considering&nbsp;how&nbsp;it&nbsp;bounces&nbsp;and&nbsp;refracts through a scene.
