Key Takeaways

An operating system may sometimes be referred to as an OS.

The OS provides the interface you use to control your computer, including icons, toolbars, and windowed programmes.

You use the OS to manage your hardware, games, and other applications effectively.

The OS also has in-built security tools to help you keep your files and data safe.

Popular operating systems include Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Laptops and mobile phones also have their own versions of OS software, such as ChromeOS and Android.

The development of the OS has directly correlated with computers becoming more accessible to a wider pool of users.

Each OS is tailored to a different purpose, resulting in some being better suited to gaming and others more favourably used for creative workflows.

What is an Operating System?

An operating system (OS) is the main piece of software that connects you, your applications, and your computer’s hardware. It manages everything happening behind the scenes, making sure your games, programmes, and components all work together properly.

Whenever you launch your favourite games, save a file, or even open your web browser, the OS acts as the middle party, relaying your commands to every digital corner of your PC. Plus, this technology isn’t just reserved for desktops, either. Laptops and even mobile phones have their own versions of OS software!

The central processing unit (CPU) often takes a lot of the credit for how your computer’s hardware and software coordinate. However, the OS plays a more foundational role within any PC build. Let’s unpack its functions in more detail.

At the core level, the OS handles several important jobs. These are:

Managing hardware resources; i.e. your processor, memory, storage

Running applications and keeping processes organised

Providing the interface that you use to control your device

Helping to protect your files and data

Essentially, your operating system is what turns your gaming PC’s individual components into a complete and fully functional machine.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-1024x1024.png" alt="Mach 6 lifestyle" class="wp-image-56299"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-300x300.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-150x150.png 150w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-768x768.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-1536x1536.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life-600x600.png 600w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mach6_PC_life.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

The History of Operating Systems

Operating systems have come a long way since their inception. To better appreciate what they’re capable of now, it’s worth looking back on the journey they’ve been on!

Operating System Origins: 1940s – 1950s

In the earliest days of computers, users interacted with their hardware directly. These folks were mostly professionals, and they required specialist knowledge and skills to operate the machines. Obviously, there was no desktop, file folders, or applications to click through.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-65769"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--292x164.png 292w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--632x355.png 632w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--850x478.png 850w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1940s-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter-.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

The year 1956 introduced the batch processing system. Users had to physically write programmes onto punch cards and feed them into the computer operator. All these tasks were collected, orderly queued, and then processed by the computer one at a time. We’d think it as sluggish now, but at the time, it did make everything simpler and cut the extortionate costs that came with running these revolutionary machines.

1960s: Multiprogramming Systems

Multiprogramming systems then appeared in the 1960s, and computers were soon able to handle more complex workloads.

As the name suggests, multiprogramming systems had the ability to have more than one application running at the same time, with much of this software now stored in memory. Systems like Unix materialised and introduced many of the concepts found in operating systems today; portability, multi-user support, modular design.

Still, this technology was mostly reserved for universities, research facilities, and important businesses. It was fancy tech for fancy folks!

1970s-1980s: Personal Computers

Personal computers (PCs) changed the game again in the 1970s and 80s, bringing this tech into the home space. As average Joes and Janes were now engaging, there became a steady demand for the OS to make computers simpler and more accessible.

Before graphical user interfaces (GUIs) became the norm, most computers relied on command-line interfaces (CLIs). Rather than clicking icons, users typed text commands to open programs, manage files, and perform everyday computing tasks. While this required more technical knowledge, command-line operating systems such as Microsoft MS-DOS, introduced in 1981 under Bill Gates’ leadership, became the foundation for future developments that would further simplify the technology.

Apple Macintosh arrived in 1985, bringing with it the GUI. Users no longer needed to type commands, but could navigate windows, icons, and menus with their mouse cursor. Microsoft Windows came along a year later to build on these ideas further. As a result, computers gradually became more streamlined and straightforward to use as the OS technology flourished.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-65768"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--292x164.png 292w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--632x355.png 632w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--850x478.png 850w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter--501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Old-Computer-Example-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Main-1600x900Light-TextTwitter-.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

2000s Onwards: The OS is Here to Stay

OSes are more powerful and versatile than ever. This OS is more closely linked to the origins of the technology, too, as it is popular among professionals! Video editors, music production specialists, graphic designers, and other creatives often flock to macOS.

What’s more, macOS integrates incredibly well with other hardware in the Apple ecosystem. File sharing, syncing with other devices, and features like Handoff give workers more means for organising their workloads.

However, macOS is not typically the first choice for gaming. That’s partly down to Apple’s business model, as developers struggle to port their games to Mac due to hardware constraints.

Plus, hardware upgrade potential on Apple devices is deliberately bottlenecked. Presumably, Apple would rather you buy an outright new system of theirs every few years than allow you to tweak what you already have.

Of course, none of this is to say that people don’t use Mac for gaming. Each version caters to a different level of user familiarity with the software, coming with its own features, design choices, and complexity. For example, there’s the beginner-friendly Zorin OS, Solus for the intermediates, and Kali Linux for experts looking to perform functions like penetration testing, security auditing, and digital forensics. Some Linux operating systems can be modified to run on older hardware; others require the most modern PC configurations to work well.

PC gamers using Linux typically gravitate toward a community-supported distro called Fedora Project. However, the Bazzite offshoot is also highly popular, as it comes with Steam included, and boasts other features optimised for PC gaming!

If you have the know-how, there’s a chance you could get more value out of Linux than any other operating system. The OS acts as the foundation that turns your components into a functional, usable computer.

What is the best operating system for gaming?

For most PC gamers, Windows is the best operating system for gaming due to broad game compatibility, extensive hardware support, and access to popular gaming platforms. However, Linux can be a strong choice for tech-savvy individuals who prefer to have more say in how their computer operates, and how they manage gaming-related processes.

What is the difference between Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux?

Windows is designed for broad compatibility across many devices, making it popular for gaming and general use. macOS is built specifically for Apple hardware, while ChromeOS is built by Google and pre-integrated into Chromebook devices. These two operating systems are sometimes preferred for creative workflows. Meanwhile, Linux is an open-source OS, which means it can be customised to offer more flexibility around work and gaming provided you have the knowhow.

Is Linux good for gaming?

Linux can support gaming, but you’ll need to harness a gaming-focused distribution. Distributions are versions of Linux focused on certain processes or functions.
