SATA SSDs can still be found in entry-level gaming PCs, however.

Because many motherboards have multiple SATA ports, it’s possible to use a SATA HDD and SATA SSD together. The former can store all your personal and professional data, while the latter can facilitate all your PC gaming needs.

What is a SATA HDD?

SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. It’s an interface that establishes the connection between a computer’s storage hardware and several compatible motherboard ports.

Building on integrated drive electronics (IDE) and parallel ATA (PATA) precursor tech, the SATA format features fewer wires, thinner cables, enhanced airflow, and even hot-swapping capability. However, the clincher is faster data transfer speeds than what came before. That’s the result of this serial communication method moving data one bit at a time over a speedier serial cable. SATA speeds get faster across the three generations, with SATA I performing at speeds up to 1.5Gbps, SATA II at 3Gbps, and SATA III at up to 6Gbps.

Meanwhile, HDD is the acronym for hard disk drive. It is a type of storage device that utilises rapidly spinning magnetic disks, called platters, while a read/write head quickly moves across the surface to locate and access data. HDDs can store an impressive wealth of data, boasting gargantuan capacity for long-term storage solutions and archival set-ups. When paired with SATA tech, an HDD can connect directly to the PC’s motherboard, providing a reliable and widely compatible storage solution.

So, now that we have the broad definitions and sense of scope out of the way, let’s dig a little deeper into performance and best case uses.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67760"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-other-random-HDD.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

SATA HDD Performance

SATA interfaces and HDD storage components are fairly impressive in their own right. However, the performance of both benefit from each other.

When the technologies are combined, the SATA interface and HDD storage solution share a collaborative workflow. It begins with the storage device controller receiving and translating a read or write request from the CPU. Once these instructions are more comprehensible to the HDD, they are transmitted to the SATA interface, which opens up the communication pathways between the HDD and the computer. All necessary commands and data travel across the SATA connection, enabling the HDD to locate the relevant information on its platters and send it back through the interface to the computer’s RAM.

As you can tell, this is a highly mechanical process with a lot of moving parts, literally. This physical way of working means HDDs can be far more vulnerable to damage and generally sluggish at handling data. Remember, the data transfer speeds pertain only to the SATA interface, not the performance of the mechanical HDD attached to it. In other words, the way an HDD operates can detract from what a SATA interface is capable of achieving, as subsequent technological developments prove.

HDD drawbacks can include the density of the platter, the rotational speed, and the overall limited capability for processing large volumes of smaller files. In the latter scenario, the drive may need to repeatedly reposition its head and then wait for the platter to rotate to the correct location. That’s when delays start to stack, and hold-ups become more noticeable in your computing and/or gaming.

Still, there’s a lot to love with HDDs. It’s not uncommon to find their capacities ranging from 1TB to 20TB and beyond, if you can believe it! That’s a huge amount of space for photos, videos, backups, and any other important files. However, speeds tend to sit in the humble 100MB/s to 150MB/s band.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67752"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-HDD.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

What is a SATA SSD?

To better understand SATA HDDs, we can recontextualise their capabilities against the technologies that followed. The most obvious point of comparison is the SATA SSD, which occupies the next tier up on the storage solution spectrum.

A SATA SSD pairs the same SATA interface with a very different storage technology. SSDs are a notable improvement over HDDs in most circumstances, particularly in the PC gaming scene.

SSD stands for solid-state drive, and unlike an HDD, it features no spinning platters or moving read/write head. Instead, it organises data on NAND flash memory, allowing data to be accessed electronically rather than mechanically. This fundamental difference gives SATA SSDs the edge when active information is being passed around different components.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67753"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Some-random-SSD.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

SATA SDD Performance

SATA SSDs are fully electronic, unlike their mechanical HDD counterparts. Because of their composition, SATA SSDs are substantially faster in facilitating data access and transfers, reaching transfer speeds of around 600MB/s.

In a gaming context, that means load screens and applications get on with the job far quicker. SATA SSDs also use less power and stay cooler during operation.

Meanwhile, the storage capacity of a SATA SSD usually falls in the 500GB to 2TB range. That’s all you need for PC gaming but is not on a par with a typical SATA HDD.

What’s more, SATA SSDs are compatible with a range of computers thanks to their diverse range of form factors. Usually, desktop PCs use the 2.5” version, but there are also M.2 SATA SSDs that can be integrated into some older gaming laptops and motherboards. They tend to have longer lifespans, too, but can be more costly to replace when they do fail.

However, SATA SSDs aren’t the most premium storage solution around. A level above them is the PCIe format and NVMe storage protocol. More performance boosts can be found down this upgrade pathway.

<img decoding="async" width="150" height="150" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-150x150.png" alt="" class="wp-image-65328"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-150x150.png 150w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-300x300.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-768x768.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2-600x600.png 600w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/What-are-the-Differences-Between-a-SATA-and-PCIe-SSD-Overclockers-UK-Blog-Feature-Image-Standard-Blog-1080x1080Light-Text-2.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" />

We’re focused on SATA HDDs and the technologies that most closely compare to them. There are still times where they can come in handy!

If your goal is to store large quantities of data long-term, then the SATA HDD is highly applicable. That’s because HDDs typically offer substantial storage capacity at a relatively low cost, making them particularly well-suited for backing up data or being upcycled into an archival storage or Network Attached (NAS) systems. Replacing them is no headache. The HDD is the answer to many storage problems that aren’t dependent on speed and minute technicalities, so they can be repurposed to fit a range of resourceful requirements.

However, if your priority is rapid-fire boot times, seamless gaming, loading applications quickly, and conducting highly responsive everyday computing, SATA HDDs aren’t the favourable choice. Still, today SATA SSDs aren’t always the first choice either, though they can still be found in entry-level gaming PCs. To optimise your play, PCIe SSDs featuring the NVMe storage protocol will serve you better. An upgrade to your storage solution may well be on the cards!

Because most motherboards have multiple SATA ports, you don’t always need to choose between a SATA HDD and a SATA SSD. It’s possible you could integrate both into your spec, using the HDD for storing personal or professional files and the SSD for all your gaming needs. SATA HDD FAQ

Are SATA HDDs obsolete?

While SATA HDDs are no longer the go-to option for performance-focused computing, they remain useful where high-capacity and cost-effective storage take precedence over speedy operation. Whether they are obsolete for your purposes, however, is for you to decide.

Are SATA HDDs slower than SSDs?

HDDs are usually slower than SSDs due to their mechanical functioning, relying on spinning magnetic platters and a moving read-write head to access data. SATA SSDs bypass these mechanical delays by harnessing NAND flash memory, which allows electronic access to data and faster performance.

How fast is a SATA HDD?

A SATA SSD can reach around 600MB/s in suitable conditions, as its lack of moving parts facilitate much faster data access.

Can I use a SATA HDD for gaming?

While you can use a SATA HDD for gaming, you’ll likely be saddled with longer loading times. As such, we do not recommend their use in these situations, as much better options are available.

What are SATA HDDs used for today?

Common uses of SATA HDDs include backing up media libraries, establishing long-term archival storage solutions, or being utilised as the backbone of a Network Attached System (NAS).

Should I Upgrade from a SATA HDD to an SSD?

If you want faster boot times, quicker application loading, and a more responsive gaming or everyday computing experience, upgrading from a SATA HDD to a SATA SSD could be worthwhile. However, if your main concern is inexpensive, high-capacity storage, a SATA HDD will continue to serve you well.

Can I use a SATA HDD and a SATA SSD?

You can use a SATA HDD and SATA SSD together, as many motherboards have multiple SATA ports. It’s not uncommon for PC users to use the HDD for the storing of their personal files, and the SSD for running games and applications.

<hr
