However, considering how much it facilitates our work, studies, and interests, we’d be wise to learn more about it! That way, we can optimise its capabilities for a range of purposes and get the most out of our technology!

It’s also worth noting that, officially, the name WiFi isn’t an acronym or contraction of any other name, despite rampant online speculation. It’s just the one that was chosen and yields no clues as to how it functions. So, without further ado, let’s explore what WiFi is and ways to best utilise it in certain scenarios!

What is WiFi Key Takeaways

WiFi is a wireless technology that connects your devices to your router, access point, or USB adapter. It is not to be confused with the internet itself.

Some routers adopt Beamforming technology, which focuses the signal on the device rather than transmitting it in every direction.

Wider WiFi channels can accommodate more data, but they also incur a greater risk of interference.

It’s recommended that routers are positioned in central, unobstructed locations to optimise the connection.

Mesh WiFi solutions can be a versatile solution for larger homes and offices, as you can position dedicated nodes in different rooms to expand connectivity coverage.

Since the creation of the first WiFi standard in 1997, this technology has continued to evolve across various standards, improving connection speeds and efficiency.

How WiFi Works

WiFi operates across 2.4GHz, 3.6GHz, 5GHz, or even 6GHz radio frequencies with data rate speeds measured in Mbps. However, the true numbers of each value will depend on the version of the technology you’re using.

Some people use the word WiFi interchangeably with ‘the internet’. It’s worth noting that these terms are not identical and don’t refer to the same thing. The internet is your broadband connection, and WiFi is the wireless method you use to access it. The main benefit of WiFi is that you’re not solely dependent on a single wired connection, allowing multiple devices to wirelessly use the internet at once.

To use WiFi, you need a dedicated router from an internet service provider or an access point (AP). Some laptops and computers that have insufficient WiFi support can benefit from the use of a USB wireless adapter, as this allows them to access the signal, too. So long as these devices have a free USB port and are prepared to install the appropriate drivers, this can be a straightforward and cost-effective way of accessing WiFi.

All the same, routers are most common for PC gamers playing at home, with some gamers even securing models specially tailored for gaming. These routers utilise more antennas and adopt Beamforming technology, which prioritises the network traffic from your gaming PC over other nearby devices.

The stronger the signal, the better. Each time you attempt an online action, that signal is sent from your device to the router. The router then sends that message onto the broadband connection, which (hopefully) approves it, and then sends it back to your device. So, each action you take on the internet is a request that gets approved in the blink of an eye, creating an illusion of seamless web surfing or online gaming.

Like Bluetooth, WiFi also harnesses channels. Each channel is measured in width; the wider it is, the more room data has to navigate, which potentially allows larger volumes of information to be transmitted. However, this comes with a trade-off: increased risk of interference. Interference refers to the disruption of the WiFi signal, commonly caused by nearby WiFi networks, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, or any other devices that utilise these shared channels. When it was first introduced, the channel width for WiFi was just 20MHz. Today, we’re at 160MHz and counting!

So, now we know what WiFi is in the broad sense. Now let’s cover the standards, connection tips, and ways to optimise it’s uses for gaming!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67786"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Internet-Gaming.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

WiFi Standards

WiFi continues to evolve through the years. It’s gone through many forms and standards.

The first WiFi standard came around in 1997. It was dubbed 802.11, a labour of love from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The data transfer speed was just 2Mbps, which in those days was pretty extraordinary. However, two years later, another standard was released that reached 11Mbps. It was at this time that Intel popped up, and with Cisco and Apple, created the name we now all know: WiFi.

WiFi was still a relatively new technology at the turn of the millennium. However, adoption accelerated throughout the early 2000s as laptops and home broadband became increasingly common. Every standard boosted the signal rate so information could be transmitted faster and expanded the range so we could connect to WiFi from further away.

2009 was a monumental year for WiFi, introducing the WiFi 4 standard, which in turn brought around Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology. These innovations used multiple antennas to transmit and receive a greater volume of data pathways simultaneously. This increased throughput and reduced the waiting times around transferring data.

The latest standards are WiFi 6 and 7 (stop it). WiFi 6 supports streaming with higher throughput and a maximum data rate of up to 9.6Gbps. Under these measures, multiple devices can share channels more efficiently, thanks to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology. Meanwhile, the WiFi 7 standard was released in 2024, raising bandwidth even higher to account for the growing development and popularity of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and ultra-high-definition streaming. It’s also designed with larger spaces in mind while drastically lowering power consumption.

To browse the entire trajectory of WiFi standards, we’ve included a comparison chart below:

WiFi Standard

Frequency Bands

Theoretical Maximum Data Rate

Channel Width

MIMO

WiFi 1 (802.11b)

2.4GHz

11Mbps

20MHz

No

WiFi 2 (802.11a)

5.4GHz

54Mbps

20MHz

No

WiFi 3 (802.11g)

2.4GHz

54Mbps

20MHz

No

WiFi 4 (802.11n)

2.4GHz, 5GHz

600Mbps

20, 40MHz

Single User (SU-MIMO)

WiFi 5 (802.11ac)

5GHz

3.5Gbps

20, 40, 80, 160MHz

Multi-User (MU-MIMO)

WiFi 6 (802.11ax)

2.4GHz, 5GHz

9.6Gbps

20, 40, 80, 160MHz

Multi-User (MU-MIMO)

WiFi 7 (802.11b2)

2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz

46Gbps

20, 40, 80, 160MHz

Multi-User (MU-MIMO)

Credit: Dell

How to Connect to WiFi Networks

We now know where WiFi’s been and where it’s going. Let’s start tapping into how to utilise it.

Basics first! On the off chance someone connected your device to the WiFi for you before now, you should know that establishing the connection yourself is very straightforward. It only requires a few simple measures and a short moment of your time.

The steps to connecting to a WiFi network on PC are:

Navigate to the bottom right corner of your Task Bar.

Click the tab that showcases the Network, Sound, and Battery (if on laptop) icons.

Find the WiFi setting that appears in the top-left corner of the pop-up.

Hover your cursor over the small arrow pointing right. A Manage WiFi connections pop-up should appear. Click the arrow.

A range of networks should appear. Simply click the network you wish to use.

Input your password when prompted, then select Connect.

If your desired network hasn’t appeared, try searching for it again by clicking the refresh button at the bottom-right of the pop-up.

There are WiFi routers that support WPS (WiFi Protected Setup), which allows you to connect a WPS-compatible device without manually entering a password. After selecting your network, you next need to:

Press the dedicated WPS button on your router, which may flash yellow or amber. The button should be clearly labelled and is typically located on the back or side of the device.

Go into your computer’s WiFi settings and select the network you desire.

Wait for your PC to establish the connection. It may take up to two minutes.

If, for whatever reason, the attempt fails, simply try again.

If you’re a frequent traveller, you may notice that some hotels or holiday homes provide you with a QR code for connecting to their WiFi. In these circumstances, you simply need to turn on your device’s camera and point it at the QR code. It should register it, automatically open your settings, and ask you to confirm the hotspot.

After these steps, you should be able to enjoy a wireless connection to the internet. Unless there’s a storm outside, which could reduce the effectiveness of your WiFi!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67785"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-Image-2.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Using WiFi for Gaming

A modern WiFi connection provides enough bandwidth for online gaming, downloads, streaming, voice chat, and other network-intensive activities. Gaming routers are also optimised, boasting strong signals and superior connection speeds.

That said, some gamers still gravitate toward a wired Ethernet connection for total assurance of a stable connection. While it’s an understandable move to make, there are some things you can do to improve the effectiveness of your WiFi’s connection. Potential solutions include:

Positioning your router closer to your PC in an unobstructed location.

Invest in a Mesh WiFi solution to expand connection coverage in your home.

Switch to a higher frequency band if your WiFi allows it, as 5GHz and 6GHz connections can provide faster speeds with less congestion.

Reduce unnecessary network traffic at home; pause large downloads, cancel streaming activities, have fewer devices connected, or configure your router to prioritise gaming traffic if it supports this.

We recommend a Mesh WiFi solution for any residents of a larger property. That way, coverage is consistent from room to room and won’t suddenly drop just because you went from the kitchen to an upstairs study.

<img decoding="async" width="150" height="150" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-150x150.png" alt="" class="wp-image-57272"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-150x150.png 150w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-300x300.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-768x768.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square-600x600.png 600w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/mesh-wifi-square.png 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" />

Want to learn more about Mesh WiFi? That much is a given.

However, new standards typically equate to wider channels. And wider channels pose a greater risk of interference, especially in spaces with conflicting devices and WiFi networks vying for channel dominance. So, while there’s no guarantee of smooth sailing, there are a few things to keep in mind to optimise your use of WiFi: namely, to enhance coverage with innovations like mesh routers and keep any other ‘rival’ devices powered down or far away when strapping in for a lengthy wireless session on the web. Alternatively, you could just use an Ethernet cable to set all your connectivity concerns aside, especially when you’re gaming online!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-1024x576.png" alt="" class="wp-image-67784"/ loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-300x169.png 300w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-768x432.png 768w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-500x281.png 500w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-291x164.png 291w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-631x355.png 631w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-400x225.png 400w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-1536x864.png 1536w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-501x282.png 501w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image-849x478.png 849w, https://www.overclockers.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Random-WiFi-image.png 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Hoping to Enhance Your WiFi?

Whether you’re currently saddled with the WiFi of yesteryear, or looking to turn good connectivity into something greater, an upgrade may be on the cards.
