Shine 5 Mechanical Keyboard, Brown Cherry MX switch, RGB Lighting, ABS Double Shot Keycaps

Ducky Shine 5 is the first model that comes with ABS double shot backlit keycaps. ABS double shot keycaps are built by two different colors of plastic combined. The keycap surface and the character will not be worn out. The LED lights can emit the light through the keycaps like other ABS backlit keycaps.

Double-shot key caps are designed and engineered in a way to try and give the users the best feel and experience we can and at the same time decorated with special pattern to achieve the best look and usability all at once.

Ducky using this new technique "2 Double-layer PCB" to improve the backlight and color choice. We put all SMD RGB LED on the second Double-layer PCB. Apparently, the SMD LED that we are going to use is larger than other keyboards that you can see on the shelf. This lead to the result of Cherry RGB switches able to improve the brightness with better outcome.

Ducky Shine 5 carries the goods and the legacy from Shine 4 shape, design and the modern looks. Hairline finish texture is used on the cover to enhance and emphasis a better quality and premium feel.

Ducky uses only genuine Cherry MX switches. Shine 5 is available in different switches to suit different preferences.

Ducky Shine 5 is powered by an ARM M3 micro-controller. This powerful controller allows advanced functions as well as stunning backlighting effects.

Lighting Modes:
100% Full Backlight Mode: All the individual keys are backlit. This mode allows you to change the backlight's color and brightness to your preference.

Breathing Mode: Keyboard's backlight rhythmically fade in and out creating a calm and tranquil backlighting effect.
Color Cycling Mode: The backlight color will slowly cycle through the colors available with the dual color LEDs.

Wave Mode: This is wave backlighting effect with a twist. Dual color LEDs gives this mode new life with plethora of colors highlighting the wave as it glides through the keyboard.

Snake Marquee Mode: Watch as the Snake snakes its way through the keyboard.

Raindrop Mode: Each LED will randomly generate a color and fade out at a randomized interval.

Reactive Mode: Ducky's innovative backlighting effect. Individual key lights up with every single key press with user adjustable color.

Reactive Mode Advanced: Ducky Shine 5 generates a randomized color with each keypress.

A pricey beauty

This is my first mechanical keyboard since the days when they were cheap and actually common - so I guess I've dived in at the deep end, so to speak. I received it today, so no long-term review here, but just my thoughts so far.

The RGB lighting here is excellent - better than any backlit keyboard I've used so far. You should be able to get almost any colour you'd prefer, for each and every key. Max brightness in one or more of RGB provides ample backlighting in an already lit room.

The keycaps are excellent, although there are a few where the legend isn't dead top/centre above the LED, that are dim in places - but not enough to cause a problem, assuming you keep the brightness high on those keys.

The keyboard is pretty heavy, stays right where you put it while you hammer away, and feels great. The top cover has a brushed metal effect, but it's plastic. If you tap hard in-between keys you'll get a rattle, but you hear very little if any of this while hitting the keys - it has a really solid feel overall.

Due to a slightly unclear but detailed instruction manual, and a lack of programming software, configuration can be a fun experience. I've used the Zone feature to colour characters, digits, F-keys and modifiers etc. differently, and it works great.

The UK layout has two Windows keys, plus the 'Fn' key - I didn't get a 'menu' keycap replacement for that. Out of the box, that key wasn't working as Fn, but as Menu - and right Ctrl was the settings/macro key. I set the dips 1,2,3 to Off,Off,Off. That returned right Ctrl to normal, set Fn to program settings/macros, instead of Menu, which I never use.

So, a pricey beauty of a keyboard - so far, I definitely think it's worth that price.

Thanks for the Haribo, OCUK :)

Excellent keyboard

Had a ducky shine 3 with cherry browns for the a couple of years and has been a great keyboard, so when my filco broke (due to an enthusiastic cat knocking my Guinness over ;( ), it was a no brainer to replace it with the new ducky.
Bit pricey, but so is every other mech keyboard, whereas this one looks the proverbial dogs nuts, very classy, without the ridiculous spikes/colors/etc that you see on the other "gaming" keyboards out there.
