Product information: GeForce GTX 980 SC "Reference Design" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (04G-P4-2982-KR)

The new EVGA GeForce GTX 980 is powered by the next generation NVIDIA Maxwell Architecture, giving you incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features.

Maxwell is the most advanced GPU architecture ever made, designed to be the engine of next generation gaming. Inspired by light, it was designed to solve some of the most complex lighting and graphics challenges in visual computing. For the first time, gaming GPU's can dynamically render indirect light using the new VXGI (Voxel Global Illumination technology). Scenes are significantly more lifelike as light interacts more realistically in the game environment.

The GTX 980 is the worlds fastest GPU and the GTX 970 offers the most advanced performance in its class. Each delivers 2x the performance of previous-generation card, bringing new gaming experiences to virtual reality, and ultra resolution 4k displays.

Enable the detail of 4k monitors, on a 1080P display. DSR produces smoother images by rendering a game at a high resolution, then downscaling it to the native resolution of the display using advanced filtering.

GeForce GTX 980 and 970 cards support tear-free, super-fast NVIDIA G-Sync monitor display technology including 4k. Together, these technologies provide the most immersive and competitive gaming experiences possible.

EPIC purchase & product

So purchased this card to replace an EVGA 760 FTW. and yes there is a difference. people say not much between 7 series and 9. but there is.

Firstly i want to clarify that i am running this EVGA GTX 980 Ref card on my i7 920 ASUS P6T which has PCI-EX 16 V2 and as this card like most/all are back compatible from shipped PCI-Ex 16 V3 (best) . the card works great even though on an older motherboard. and you can see from the game setting below performs great.

just a beast of a card.
with older games ie BF4 you can happily get it to High/ultra settings keeping all the hungry extras like AA FSAA HBAO so on to medium on 1920x1080 res at a solid 60fps.

Newer games like FC4 can be run at same res with the settings set to ultra and some of the same hungry options and "Fur" setting off. odly enough. unless its your thing* note you will have to set "view distance to about 40%. destroys the performance.. (hopefully a patch will be soon)

Looking forward to see how one card performs with GTA V.

And imagine running it full throttle through PCI-Ex 16 V3. or 2.. :S

Other info/tips to shot down peoples here'say and what not.
im running two 1920x1080 screens connected via HDMI-HDMI and other HDMI-DVI
i found it better for me to run master screen via DVI socket.
and finally Install Precision X . learn to use it and then open "Fan Curve" and "enable Automatic Fan Control" the default does well but i found it was straight to 70c target and getting warm trying to be quiet . with "AFC" on the card will be alittle louder but will keep it under my set 70c target by a good 10c . really not that loud.

I have a few Performance Test Vids on my YT - Sgt Drayke.

Its a beast

Got this little beauty on Saturday and spent the overclocking the backside of it. The core is currently @ 1401mhz boosting to 1550mhz. The memory overclock was a little disappointing but is stable @ 7600mhz.

It scores 13k plus in Firestrike at these speeds, which for a single card on air using a reference cooler is amazing.

Heatwise, the auto fan control is a little off, as it will hit 80oc and throttle. After setting a very aggressive fan profile, it now maxes @ 61oc whilst benching. The card is however, completely silent when gaming.

Is it worth buying? YES! If you have a 6 series card or lower then its a no brainer. If you are rocking a 780 or 780ti then I wouldn't bother ( just pick up another 780 ) and run SLI.

I can't wait to see the full fat chip but Nvidia must be applauded for making a card this fast with such a low power draw.

5/5

review 1 EVGA GTX 980 SC

I have just upgraded from a GTX 560ti, which has served me well for a number of years. This new GTX 980 has been fantastic. Every game I have tried (far cry 3/Battlefield 4/Hitman absolution/Arma3 to name a few) have been flawless on ultra settings with full MSAA on. Only benchmark I have been able to do is on Hitman absolution as it comes with a benchmark test. Lowest frame rate was 46, highest was 89 averages was 54. That was quite low i thought, but having been playing it for a while, I haven't noticed any drops in frame rate, and it looks very nice and smooth. I will be upgrading to a G-Sync monitor and a 1tb SSD at xmas to make things even better. My PC specs are below if that helps? I definitely recommend this card if upgrading from a 680 or lower. you might not get much benefit if you have a card higher than a 680, but cant be sure??
