A few scares, but excellent

I had initially planned to buy the EVGA Supernova G1 650W PSU, but I ended up buying this one after it was recommended to me, for a few quid more. OCUK service was great as usual, I opted for the free next day delivery and it (along with a few other bits I ordered) arrived within 36 hours of the order, which was done just after midnight, so that's the best one could hope for. Also came with free Haribo.

Cracking the seal on the box, I found the packaging a bit underwhelming and then realised that any more packaging was unnecessary. Installing it I had few issues. One thing to note is that the 4 screw holes for mounting it in the case are not all at the corners like they should. The top two screws were offset, but thankfully my case (NZXT Phantom 430) accommodated some half-holes for those. It bugged my OCD a bit, but the PSU mounting was firm and secure.

Some of the included modular cables are a bit thick and unwieldy, especially the 20+4 pin motherboard cable which didn't like to bend too much. Might be a problem with folks using smaller cases. It came with all the cables as mentioned, but I discovered something extra. When I first got out the CPU cable, I noticed the motherboard end was split into 2 8 (4+4) pin cables. It plugged in fine but then the PSU side wouldn't plug in. I panicked and thought there was a bent pin or something preventing me from plugging it in. After rummaging around the other cables, I found relief as I found the actual CPU power cable, just a single 4+4 pin, which plugged in fine. Thus I came to the conclusion that I'd accidentally gotten an extra cable from another model of PSU, nothing big.

After the bare essentials (+ a few case fans to check for noise levels) were hooked up, I pressed the switch on the back and and tried turning the motherboard on. Second panic (could have been a DOA mobo), before I pressed the power switch on the PSU again and the PC turned on. Turns out my PSU came with the switches in the on position. Once again, no major harm done, just a small scare. I didn't notice the PSU making any noise at all, over the already quiet CPU fans and case fans (though one was on full whack as the last fan header on the mobo was just a 3 pin with no fan control).

I've been using the PC I built with this PSU for a week and I've had no issues. The PSU comes with a 5 year warranty so I expect to continue like this for a long time. Great product and I'd buy again if I needed another 650W PSU.
