What android phones should I look out for?

My contract with my current provider, O2, runs out late this year and I want to replace my old N95 8GB.

I'm really interested in getting an android phone, but I don't know what phones I should be looking out for. The features I definitely want to get is a full qwerty keyboard*, a 3.5 jack, a smoother browsing experience than my N95 (I have the urge to take it to a sledge hammer sometimes), and better battery life than my N95. I like the look of the recently announced Acer A1, but it lacks the qwerty keyboard I have been craving for so long.

Also I am thinking about buying my next phone up front without a contract, does this make sense cost wise in the long term?

Edit: with regard to storage I don't mind if the internal storage is poor as long as it has decent SD support.

edit edit: *physical qwerty keyboard

Maybe the Motorola CLIQ if/when it's released? I don't know of any Android devices out at the moment with QWERTY and decent battery life.

Before I take the Hero in a couple of weeks, is there anything on the horizon that is going to be better than it? I was gutted when I bought the Touch Diamond and a few weeks later the Touch HD was announced.

Yes, but probably nothing this side of Xmas. IIRC HTC have another 4/5 handsets planned for 2010. Huawei are launching a PayG Android device on T-Mobile for £180 which looks like it might be decent - that's due this month. And there's the Motarola Cliq (although I don't like the look of their UI).

The Moto Cliq, sounds about what the OP is after though.

There is no confirmed date for the SE Xperia X3, in fact the phone itself hasn't even been confirmed yet, but the rumours are suggesting early next year as a release date for it.

Maybe next year is too long for to wait, but it has the potential to be a great phone, so I'm going to keep my eye on this one.

This will be mine.....i've been waiting and waiting since the first pictures were released months ago.

I've been tempted to be impatient and get other phones, but this looks amasing!

@OP: I was in more or less the same position as you (although I wanted a decent camera too). I eventually decided on the N97 and figured I'd give Android another year to expand its handset range.

well according to the article I read a few months back(think it was engadet) there's like 20 android based phones due out by the end of the year, tho 26th-31st december is not this side of christmas but still this year I some how dout there'll be a huge number of phones out in just those 5 days :)

but then as he saying goes you can't believe everything you read, plus there's always delays.

Plus we don't always get handsets first in the UK.

The Huawei T-mobile Pulse is available now though.

Just read this regarding the X3 (or x10)

We have mentioned the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 a few times over the last month or so, but now we hear that it will probably be named the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 instead. The release date of the X10 is set to be February 2010 where it will be officially revealed just before at MWC 2010.

Although it will get revealed at MWC 2010, we might get some sort of official announcement in early November according to gsmarena.

All we know about the phone is that it will be Android based with a large screen and also be very thin and light. It will also run a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and have the usual connectivity options included such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G along with a GPS chip for location based services.

Definitely one to look out for when launched!
