I have just been notified (I would prefer not to reveal the source) that the Q9550 has been made end of life by Intel. There is nothing on the Intel website at the moment, but the US prices have been going up, while the UK stocks seem to be low. Does anyone know anything more about this?

core i5/i7s are the main focus of intel and its next generation, considering the Q-series has been out for a longish time theyre moving onto bigger and better things. long live the Quads!

I'm not surprised. They've been around for ages and to be blunt the new i5/i7's are better in every way.

There should be plenty around in the second hand market for a long time to come though.

I image we'll only see Core2Quads unto the £135~ area now, anything over that is i5 teritory. Also note AMD slashed the prices of it's £150 odd CPUs down to this mark yesterday, so Intel is only competing with the i5 in this pracie bracket now.

I've been tempted to swap out my q6600 for a q9550, I guess 2nd hand would be my best bet from now on...

Been tempted to do this myself. Just not sure how much i would gain performance wise? My Q6600 is currently @ 3Ghz no worries. The 9550 has more cache and presumably OC higher. But would it give much extra in real life use?

It depends, some people have seen noticeably higher performance with the Q9*** chips with Logic Studio benchmarks... As for gaming, I have no idea!

Depends on how far you've clocked your current q6600 and how far you will clock your q96xx, but generally it's more of a sidestep versus moving to i7/i5.

No difference in gaming whatsoever. A while back i switched from a 3.8ghz q6600 to a q9550 EO, had an easy 3.8ghz from it as well. Was maybe a bit of an impulse buy as i fancied trying one out. Great clocking chips though and a lot cooler running than the older 65nm parts.

Q9X50 are still the fastest CPU clock for clock overall in gaming*... tho whether you'd see any difference from a similiarly clocked Q6600 depends on how CPU sensitive the game is, what resolution your playing at and what GPU setup you have.

* If a game can use 4+ threads effectively then the i5/i7 would win by a decent margin.

I only noticed the diff once my Q9650 hit 3.8GHz+ versus my former Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, but as said by others this was only with CPU intensive games, such as GTAIV. Imo unless you plan to overclock something silly then it's not worth going from 3.4/3.6GHz Q6600/Q6700 to Q9550/Q9650 with similar over clock.

But then again should you manage to sell a good clocking Q6600 to some auction site mug for silly money... ;)

I managed to sell the q6600 for £100.00 on mm, which wasnt bad considering it had been lapped so no warranty. Looking back now it was a bit of a crazy upgrade getting the q9550, but id always fancied giving one a try out, The cooler temps were nice as my q6600 was hitting 68-68-62-62 prime load, q9550, 55-53-47-47.

what multi's will the Q9505 & Q8400 have?

Q9400: 2.66 GHz, FSB 1333 MHz, L2 Cache 6 MB, multiplier 8.
Q9505: 2.83 GHz, FSB 1333 MHz, L2 Cache 6 Mb, multiplier 8.5.

Both are 95W and use R0 stepping. The Q9505 is obviously a Q9400 with a higher multiplier, rather than a crippled Q9550.

The situation with the Q9550 disappearing from the shelves so early is certainly curious, as the unofficial Intel road maps were expecting it to survive until the end of the first quarter of 2010. The low power Q9550s was to go first, by the end of 2009. Obviously, Intel are keen on introducing a sizeable price/performance gap b/n the LGA775 and the LGA1156/LGA1336 cpus.
