C2D at 3ghz and a 4870 512 meg card it runs most stuff ok at 1920x1200 but avp obv i cant do dx11 and i think its quite noisy, what a step up thats not overkill, or is it pointless with current cpu?

I wouldn't say it's pointless with that cpu, but a little overclocking never hurt anyone. A HD5770 will give you roughly the same performance as your current card, except from the fact that it's dx11 capable. The next step up from that (let's just forget that the 5830 even exists) is the 5850 which will give you a boost in performance and is dx11 capable. So it's you call mate. :)

The cheaper 5850's have all mysteriously disappeared so we are talking £251.99. I would agree the 5830 is a pointless card at its current pricing, has anybody actually bought one of these, so its the 5770 or an expensive 5850 depending on your budget.:)

They seem to have gone up in price and my CPU is oc from 2.1 how much of a jump in performance is a 5850 over a 4870?

That's a good overclock. If you don't urgently have to change your graphics card you could hold off for a little while, the upcoming release of Nvidia's dx11 cards is sure to push prices down a little. I know what you mean about the noise from a hd4870. I have one and changed the cooler yesterday because it was so irritating.
