Owncloud vs Onedrive

ATM i currently use Onedrive with 1TB of space. I'd like to run my own Owncloud VPS, 100GB SSD, from bhost.net (too have better control of my data and as they are very cheap). Are there many disadvantages? I was thinking Onedrive might have better network connectivity and redundancy. Also I dont have broadband in my area so upload GBs will be very slow.

Or i could bring up a Owncloud server at home and connect that somehow to my storage?

Depends what data redundancy your host offers? Single SSD or RAID?
I have a one cloud server on a VPS and I've never had an issue with it on a 100mbit connection.

Running it from home would be far more limiting on connection speed.

Owncloud is absolutely top notch - I find it far more useful than OneDrive or similar services.

The only downside I can see with OC is that you loose the resiliency that other cloud services offer. If your OC server dies, it'll be a pain getting back up. It will undoubtedly work out cheaper than services like drop box.

OC setup is fairly straightforward if you're fairly competent with Linux cli, and I think they do a Windows based version too. Had my own OC VM up and running on Debian in around 2 hours, and it hasn't gone down since.

BHost VPS will be fine, their infrastructure is pretty resilient and it is 1gbps line so it should easily top out your home connection in terms of download and upload speed.

Use discount code LEBSUMMER2014 for 50% off @ bhost too. Drop me a line if you need any help getting setup in terms of the networking/dns etc

Not a problem on a VPS or a Dedicated server.

tso will have limits to stop people hammering bandwidth.

Also this three reminds me I need to modify Owncloud to log failed login attempts for Fail2Ban

For fault tolerance would it be possible to get 2 VPSes and set up Owncloud for failover?

Why not OVH - http://www.kimsufi.com/uk - where you can get a whole server for a fiver?
You really don't need storage on an SSD...

Consider these too:
http://seafile.com/en/home
https://pydio.com/solution
https://ind.ie/pulse
http://www.bittorrent.com/sync/download
http://barracudadrive.com
http://sparkleshare.org

I dabbled with some of the above and ownCloud, then stuck with Dropbox when they upped storage to 1TB recently. As well as trusting it more and it being less trouble and work...
...It's all about the apps. The Dropbox applications are excellent, and a lot of other applications integrate it. I know OneDrive and Google Drive have their advantages too.

Having a server is great to mess about with, but I want my data reliably and securely stored.

Whole server for a fiver is great, however if you need more than just a cloud storage service is doesn't necessarily add up to great value.

Don't have a huge amount of experience with all of these, however I did just set up BT Sync yesterday and ownCloud a few days back, both as plugins on OpenMediaVault. The latter I had no end of problems with, worked fine for a short period of time but the Mac clients started throwing up a "Wrong credentials" error for one of the accounts (as well as just being awful in general). Appears to be a common problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution (constantly telling people to read an FAQ that doesn't even reference such a problem isn't helpful). The impression I got was that ownCloud is great when it works, but fairly buggy. Web interface appeared to be great though.

BT Sync on the other hand, is only a file synchronisation utility, but you can of course replicate a web service by providing some WebDAV/SFTP/FTPS access. Does offer versioning in the form of a hidden directory. If that's all you need from such a service, frankly I can't fault it from what I've seen so far.
