Sadly there’s a lot of that going around. I used to fly A330/A340 and have also been made redundant. Hopefully I’ll get my job back sometime next year if I’m lucky.

In the mean time, I’ve no idea what I’m going to do!

The guy helping out at our local newsagents is an EasyJet pilot! I think fortunately he has enough money to get by for a while but he didn't have much hope of flying again anytime soon.

Delivery driver. I deliver clean & collect dirty overalls, roller towels and mats for food factories, supermarkets, car dealers, garages and other small to large engineering firms. Drive a 7.5 tonner about 700 miles a week to the same customers.

Pros
More or less own boss when out on the road.
Never the same day even though its a routine.

Cons
Pay. Not good for what I do
Deadlines
Other road users
Attitude of a few customers
Attitude of management
Under scrutiny the whole time. (Cameras in the vehicles & GPS for speed monitoring/driving style/Tachograph)

I'd like to leave but at 54 & with Job prospects at my age and what going on right now I'll try & stick it out until its time to retire or the firm goes bust, that has nearly happened in the past so it wouldnt surprise me if it did.

:D:D:D I had to laugh at this, as i work on the engineering side of a big software dev company, and frequently get roped into escalations where a customer is unhappy about something because the presales/sales guy has clearly overstretched the capabilities of the solution / undersized a solution due to budget constraints.

Theres a really fine balance, problem is other vendors are renowned for stretching the hell out of the truth, but we try and stay as honest as possible :)

Cloud Security Engineer in the finance sector (household name). Title was set back from previous, but the pay and company is amazing. Its a new role thats being hampered by Covid but I have every faith it'll be a dream job in the coming months.

Palliative care doctor

I look after those with a palliative condition, and we consider ourselves 'specialists' at symptom control.
It's not all doom and gloom. In fact, it's the loveliest and happiest place I've ever worked.
About half the patients we have go home with their pain, nausea, agitation etc much more controlled (albeit with a life limiting condition).
The other half die in our care. But the vast vast majority have a lovely, calm death completely free of pain, panic or suffering. And we are afforded the time and staffing levels to really make a difference with families. We spend time with them, we help them accept what's coming and then help them grieve after.

Pros
I feel I truly make a difference. I can think of few things I'd rather do, and be privileged to do, than help some achieve a dignified and peaceful death.
Always more snacks than you can eat
Pay is OK

Cons
Pay would be better in other areas
Sometimes it's impossible to not take work home with you, especially if someone young/someone you've looked after for months dies

Tier two support analyst - I basicaly do SQL data fixes, bug hunt in SQL / code an either do minor code fixes or pass it on to the dev team.

Pros - It can be interesting work and the firm I work for it nice and friendly.
Cons - the pay could be better for the level of technical proficiency required for the role.

Head of IT for a retail business that has suffered significantly during the pandemic.

Pros
Get to manage a team of developers and IT engineers
Get to be hands on with my technical knowledge (now more then ever since they removed over half my team with redundancies)
Decent pay

Cons
An executive team that does not understand IT and has a large sales driven culture

I would find this fascinating to do if it was just 'white collar' type crime, but I can imagine you have to see things that can never be unseen. :(

It was something I always wanted to do for years so finally getting in and realising what it's actually like in the real world was a bit of an eye opener. Thankfully I was in a position to make a career change and see what it's like only then to realise it's not for me and change into something more suited to me.

The last 10 years I've been IT contracting. Accepted a perm role that starts Aug 1st. Title "Associate Director Product Delivery Excellence" which in a nutshell is making sure the IT org runs their product lines effectively and inline with business goals and providing the most value.
I already contract at the company, so know the pros and cons in general. I work with the ******* already.

Pros: Salaries, pensions, holiday, flexi working, remote work possibilities, interesting work, science is cool

Cons: People been there years so resistant to change, can be bureaucratic, we've got ourselves into this enterprise IT where everything takes an age, unless you know someone and ignore all processes. Can be very political. You can chose to use it to your benefit or drown in the BS.
