Am after the cheapest 500gb ext hdd BUT has to be ok for 110v 60hz (canada)

The one on offer (lacie) at the moment seems like a great deal but I have looked around lots of sites can cant see the voltage spec.

Most adapters seem ok as they range from 100v-240v like my laptop.

Another thing is i will be using it with my laptop but my usb is a crappy old usb 1.1 and doesnt work with a lot of things that require power like my G5 mouse as it says power exceeded.

Any adive greatly appreciated.

do all ext hdds work with old usb ports and will it exceed power or does it draw absolutly no power cos most of the time a lot of devices dont work on the port.

Since your USB ports on the laptop seem to be amazingly poor at supplying voltage it might be worth trying to find a PCMCIA card with USB ports on it, I'm not sure where still sells them or even if anyone does but they did exist for a while.

I'm afraid I don't know, I don't have an external hard drive but I'd suspect that most of the power will be supplied by the adapter and it will be just data going through the USB leads. However USB 1.1 is painfully slow for transferring anything more than a couple of MB.
