Hi Dodger
Spoke to Dell yesterday and i can confirm they have stopped the graphics upgrade to 256 on the Inspiron series , the bloke could not give me any reasons as to why , looking at the Vostro range now, still get the upgrade for them

Hi

I ordered an Inspiron 1720 with 9-cell battery & 8600M GT upgrade last night, cost less than £590.

Was disappointed that Dell no longer allow for graphic upgrade on the 1520 range, also no more 1650 x 1050 screen either.

According to a certain tech website, The Inspiron 1525s are coming soon, so it might be worth holding off, if only to see if the 1520 prices come down as they try and clear stock.

Edit: Actually it looks like the 1525 won't have any graphics options aside from the standard Intel X3100 - I suppose they're trying to shift the gaming people over to the XMS M1530.
