my dad is looking to buy a new laptop but doesn't want to go a penny over 500ukp. Gaming not really on his agenda, so just something with 2gigs, dual core and a good screen really. Any thoughts? thanks

Samsung R60 (£499)

Graphics ATI Radeon 1250M 128MB
Hard Drive Size 160Gb
Memory Size 2GB
Operating System Windows Vista™ Home Premium
Optical Drive DVD Dual Layer Rewriter
Processor Intel Pentium Dual Core
Processor Cache 1MB
Processor Model Number T2330
Processor Speed 1.6GHz
Screen Size 15.4"
Screen Type WXGA Widescreen 33.12 x 20.7cm

The Dell Vostro are the best value for money but personally I think they look cheap and unattractive, but I'm a fashion victim :D

For example:
Dell Vostro £474.82
using 10% discount code (8W23NFC8ZR45TW)
Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T7250 (2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
Microsoft Operating System Genuine Windows Vista® Business - English
Memory 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
Video Card 128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
Hard Drive 160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
LCD 17.0" Widescreen WXGA (1440x900) TFT Display

No going to easily beat that spec for the price.

I have been tracking the Vostro and you are 100% right imo, you will not beat the specifications/price value that the Vostros are currently offering. FYI, the discount code does not work ^^

No point buying a laptop with 1GB of RAM and 80GB HD...spend a bit more and it'll last longer. At least have major brand videocard with decent drivers, unlike the very cheapest - should use Trident laptop, it's a Pentium 2.6ghz P4 and SD AVI are slow when it's in low power mode, only in full power does the video become synced up.
