ZDNET: Is Linux breaking Microsoft's Grip?

Open-source software gave Microsoft a one-two punch this week, with the European Union and an African nonprofit educational organization showing preference for Linux systems. The European Union awarded on Thursday a $249,000 (250,000 euro) contract to U.K.-based system-integrator Netproject to study the feasibility of moving the information systems of several member countries' governments to the Linux operating system from Microsoft's Windows OS.

Linux vs Windows Security

If it's not the Slapper worm, it's the Mighty worm -- if you're watching the technology press recently, you might think Linux is plagued with security problems lately. And then there's the never-ending Linux vs. Microsoft security debate, revived by Newsfactor a couple of weeks ago.

We went to Jay Beale with our questions about the current state of Linux security. He's a security consultant specializing in host lockdown, network security and security audits. Jay also serves as lead developer of the Bastille project, which creates a hardening script for Linux and HP-UX, is a member of the Honeynet Project, and is a core participant in the Center for Internet Security.

OpenSource: A Strong Case for E-Government

This was the official title of a conference I attended last week in Washington, D.C., where government officials and consultants from countries on every inhabited continent gathered to discuss how and why they are using more Linux and Open Source software. This article is an overview of the event. Later this week I'll report on conversations I had with Peruvian Congressman Edgar Villanueva, with several Linux advocates from Vietnam, and with some very strange Microsoft apologists from the Alexis De Toqueville Institution.

Most of the conference sessions had a strong "how to do it" bent to them, not only on the technical side but also on the political front. Many attendees were Open Source devotees, but a significant number came to learn more about why they should use Open Source, and many -- even the strongest advocates -- seemed at least as interested in the political and economic ramifications of Open Source as in learning about the latest Gnome, MySQL or OpenOffice features.

There was broad consensus among attendees from less-prosperous countries that Linux and Open Source are the way to go.

Linux finding its own niche in the automotive industry

To lower costs and stay competitive, automakers are turning to inexpensive Linux-based computers for crash simulations, structural analysis and other tasks once handled by expensive high-performance systems.

The auto industry's move away from computers based on custom hardware and the proprietary Unix operating system mirrors trends in other industries, including oil exploration and retail.

"This is a game-changer for any industry that has a high-performance computing workload," said Steve Solazzo, general manager for Linux operations at IBM.

Open-source Linux can be downloaded for free or purchased at a fraction of the price of other operating systems. It runs on mass-produced chips from Intel and other semiconductor makers.

Companies such as IBM, which also is a major player in the supercomputer business, are bundling the software and teaching businesses how to install it
