I just thought I'd let everyone know about this Early Day Motion brought up by Austin Mitchell MP who is also a photographer.

Mitchell, Austin

That this House is concerned to encourage the spread and enjoyment of photography as the most genuine and accessible people's art; deplores the apparent increase in the number of reported incidents in which the police, police community support officers (PCSOs) or wardens attempt to stop street photography and order the deletion of photographs or the confiscation of cards, cameras or film on various specious ground such as claims that some public buildings are strategic or sensitive, that children and adults can only be photographed with their written permission, that photographs of police and PCSOs are illegal, or that photographs may be used by terrorists; points out that photography in public places and streets is not only enjoyable but perfectly legal; regrets all such efforts to stop, discourage or inhibit amateur photographers taking pictures in public places, many of which are in any case festooned with closed circuit television cameras; and urges the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers to agree on a photography code for the information of officers on the ground, setting out the public's right to photograph public places thus allowing photographers to enjoy their hobby without officious interference or unjustified suspicion.

If you agree with what's outlined in it write your MP an email asking them to sign it. I've written to mine :)

Quite impressed, sent the email last night and already had a reply from the Staffordshire Moorlands MP saying she is happy to sign it.

Had a reply from the MP's assistant 5 days ago just to confirm I'd asked a question..... but nothing from the man himself, John Gummer, Conservative.

My MP wrote back saying he's front bench now which means that he can only sign certain EDM's and this isn't one of them. I recon JG is probably in the same boat.

Linda Gilroy got back to me saying she is a photographer too, she fully agrees and will be signing it :) = result

I just thought, I'd imagine they would need to sign the EDM personally in Westminster so if you've contaced your MP and they haven't signed it yet they may be in their constituancy and will sign it when they are next in Westminster. I guess.

Just asked my MP to sign it. I got stopped in Edinburgh's Waverly train station under the terrorists act, because I was carrying a camera.

But they can ask the backbenchers to sign can't they?
<-----knows nothing of politics.....

This is what someone else told me on another forum (their MP's response to this EDM).
