This could be related to my rear engine mount / roll restrictor needing to be replaced but i'm unsure.

I have been using the car knowing the roll restrictor could do with being replaced.

But I've just tried to use the car again and I can't get it into gear with the engine running and clutch pressed. It just makes a grinding noise and the revs drop by about 100 when I start to move the stick into any gear.
With the engine off it will just find the gears with a bit of effort.

Do you think it's all related to the roll restrictor as it may not be aligned properly or something?
or is this a clutch/gearbox problem as well?

As I said I have been using the car knowing about the rear restrictor problem (maybe i shouldn't have used it?) and haven't had any major problems until now.

car is a 1998 Mondeo ST24.

thanks

Sounds clutch related to me.

that's what i thought and not what i was hoping for but thanks for the reply.
i was hoping to take it to a garage later to have the rear restrictor replaced as i've given up on it after breaking one bolt already.

If I still manage to get it there i'll ask them to have a look.

Turn car off, put into first gear, depress the clutch, start the car. If it leaps forward, the clutch is not engaging.

Oh, make sure nothing is too close in front of the car!

Just tried, it didn't like that

With the clutch depressed as i tried to start the car it tried to leap forward and the noise it made wasn't nice

Have you checked the fluid level in the brake/clutch resevoir, I seem to remember Mondeos have a hydraulic clutch, so maybe the level is low and the slave cylinder is not working right.

You may have a leak, it may just be a case of replacing the slave cylinder not the whole clutch.

It's a coaxial slave so it's almost the same amount of work to replace as doing the clutch!

Ford quote £83+VAT for a clutch kit and £180ish + VAT for the slave cylinder
about 5.5 hours of labour = £799 including the above parts and VAT!

I wouldn't take it to Ford but even at £40/hour it's over £500. Not cheap are they, that's half the value of the car

it wont be the rear restrictor as mine was completely knackered and still went into gear fine I replaced mine with solid poly versions from america won't be to everyones taste though as you do get a bit more noise and vibartions though the car

Ok wasn't sure, had a fair idea it was hydraulic but not sure of actual layout, may as well do both at the same time then, make sure everything is new, less likely to go wrong in the future.

Sods law if you change the clutch the cylinder will go fairly soon after

Hi, If you wouldn't have said about the revs dropping even with the clutch fully depressed i would say to try a replacement engine mount as if the engine is out of place it will cause the gear linkages to be miss aligned and therefore not select the gears properly, however as you are selecting gears and the revs are dropping this indicates a problem with the clutch.

One thing you could try if possible is get the car rolling (push it, roll down a hill etc) and hold the revs low then try and slot the car in gear as it gains speed - in essence a clutchless gearchange.

My Fiesta (1.25 - hydraulic clutch) is at a specialist Ford place (Hoddens, Fenton) at the moment with the same problem...thought it was just the slave cylinder that needed replacing but turns out its some mechanical fault (can't remember the specifics, sorry) so the gearbox has got to come out so while they're at it they're doing the clutch anyways...63,000 miles on the clock so it'd be due soon enough I'm sure.

At least its only costing me £280...thanks for making me feel better.
