Xubuntu, how to enable external monitor port on laptop?

Hi guys,

I have installed Xubuntu on to an old Acer Travelmate we have going spare and want to use it as a media server in the living room. The machine has an Intel 855 graphics chipset which is apparently supported out of the box in Ubuntu and I can set the video modes for the laptop's monitor perfectly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to enable the external monitor port, and set up the display resolutions for it - I have tried Google with no success, have any of you lot set this up before?

You might have to use the i810 driver instead of the fancy new Intel one, if it's using that.

I take it you have tried changing the output (typically using something like fn-f6) to toggle between external output and internal?
