Restarting a server... not as simple as it sounds

Hi guys,

One of my servers has gone a little **** up... I THINK it's rebooted itself and not all of the services have started up properly (can't say for sure).

All I know is Exchange / RDP aren't running at present.

Tried logging in via vnc and it says there aren't enough resources to log on.

Also tried the remote restart tool with no luck.

Any ideas?

I can ping the box and telnet to exchange/spam filter but that's about it.

I'll be able to restart it manually on Monday morning but as it's our Exchange box i'd rather get it up and sorted before then

Can you not run either a "shutdown -m \\machinename -r -t 01" from another machine on the same LAN, or use psexec to start up enough services to get RDP up.

Nope, I already stated the restart tool doesn't work, plus it won't even log me in with VNC so I doubt it's going to let me run/start any other services (probably the reason they aren't started, because they can't).

It gives me this error btw;

"Not enough server storage is available to process this command". Strange...

*Does some googling*.

Tried to restart the server service as an example, get the same error.

Remote manage the server and turn exchange services off etc. Then try and VNC / RDP to the box.

Neither I'm afraid, get the same error when trying to remote manage.

Maybe i'll just have to reboot it myself on Monday morning.

With the shutdown command you need to use /f as well in this situation.

Might not help but:

shutdown /r /m \\server name or ip /t 00 /f would be better as this forces all hung services to shutdown.

To be honest any command I see to be chucking at it gives me ""Not enough server storage is available to process this command".

I've also used the shutdown command with the /f too thanks for the post though!

I tried shutting down some services with psservice as well with no luck (same error).

Looks like it's dead good and proper!

I would usually say that, but it's not *always* possible to do so, especially at the weekend.

I'm lucky enough to have full access to the two buildings at the weekend, but not everyone does.

What part of "Maybe i'll just have to reboot it myself on Monday morning." did you not get?

Unfortunately I don't have access to my work building during the weekends, only reason I'm so keen to get it back up as it hosts webmail which people are obviously using over the weekend!

I love ILO - seriously (although "high performance mouse" issues on the old versions could cause violence)
