I have been getting 100+ pings and poor speeds since I joined o2 about a week ago.

Its fine in the day but once evening comes, bam, poor speeds and pings, ok tonight is very bad, but there still is major problems on the network.

I've been on O2 a bit longer nearly two weeks, high ping has been a major disappointment.

Also trying to download anything from the major file hosting sites is very strange. The downloads seem to pause for long periods without any data being transferred.

If there was a poll on this very forum now, which is better/choice, between Cable or ADSL, I know 90% of people would like take cable everytime.

Well just because 90% of people would say something doesnt make it right although I doubt your statistics. BT is fibre to the exchange and cable is fibre to a local delivery point, the final part of the connection for both apart from very limited circumstances is copper. From a technical standpoint ADSL is far more extensible, and due to the way that cable works your data is transmitted to everyone in your local area.

Whereas its more than possible to have an ADSL connection with no contention the same is not true of cable due to the nature of the technology.

As for the delivery medium what the hell does it matter to the customer if its copper or fibre that comes into there home? Customers are interested in latency, bandwidth, contention and reliability. ADSL has comparable latency to cable as standard, granted cable can provide higher bandwidth, but due to the fact that its a broadcast medium there will always be contention and its theoretically possible for someone in your local area to snoop on your incoming traffic. As for reliability well that is dependant on too many factors but in my experience you get better support from someone other than virgin.

On o2 here normally its very fast but tonight speeds are very poor and ping times >100ms, It doesnt exactly impress that the backup failover infrastructure cannot cope with what the primary route can cope with.

Lots of ISPs are having problems.

And name one commercial ISP that have a "backup fallover infrastrucrue" with the same capacity as the "primary route".

It depends and whose word do you take. Without detailed information that no ISP is going to give to a home user you can never tell. As for commericial ISPs that have a backup that has the same capacity as the primary route my employer has that for every customer that pays for a resilient service.

My Be Pro went live last night and I was thoroughly disappointed.

Syncing around 18meg but only getting a throughput equivalent to a 2meg line and shocking pings.

Hopefully this is just an anomaly due to this fibre incident in London - otherwise I'm going back to semaphore.

It is. The last two and a half years on Be/o2 for me have been fine but last night was bad. Coincidence? I doubt it...
