Server monitoring software

Anyone know of any good server monitoring tools? (possibly freeware)

Could do with something that will ping a server every 5 mins and alert me if it goes down.

Depending on how you are on the programming side of life, you can code your own or take a look at hotscripts.com for a few freebies.

For a paid solution you could have a look at something like Status2k which isn't bad, one copy can monitor many servers.

If you want to go higher up the geeky stakes look at Nagios - thats a big beast but it monitors anything and everything!

Nagios.

Status2K is nothing more than a gimic, just a cool looking status page for your server. The actual monitoring features arn't great.

Nagios is decent, can code your own checks etc quite easy.
