Speaker cables question

Hi, is it possible to cut one of the cables and connect the speaker to a dvd player by using the copper wire inside the cable, because there is a silver part on the end of the cables.

If its a bare wire connection to a spring clip it's usually just solder to keep the strands together, bare copper twisted together will do just exactly the same.

yea thats what i thought, its just that i hadnt plugged my dvd player in for about 4-5 months, and when i did today i heard the sound of what i thought was a speaker coming on, but then the dvd player wernt coming on and seemed to act dead, i changed the fuse in plug and every thing but so joy, the only thing i can think it must be is the power supply blowing :S
It's just ran out of warranty too
