If your ever stuck I think the chemist will give you one without a prescription if they see that you need it, well at least the ones near me do.

Your best bet is to get your prescriptions filled out at a few of the major retailers, Lloyds, Boots, Sainsburys etc as you can then go go into any of them in the country and they can see on their system that you have had that medication before and is on repeat and so they are happy to give one out with relatively little waiting/form filling. Other than that it's up to the chemist if they want to be bothered filling out all the forms that are required or just sending you to A&E (where you can get an inhaler but it does seem like a waste of resources to me!).

Seretide has revolutionised my symptoms to the point they aren't an issue any more.

Its a purple inhaler and replaces the brown one which for me didn't really do much. I only use my Salbutamol (blue inhaler) when I first start playing sports. Other than that it stays in the draw.

Ask your doc about it at your next checkup.

Another vote for Seretide here! I got to the point a few years back that my I was constantly struggling to breath. I went to the doctor and he gave me a prescription for Seretide, told me to take it twice in the morning and night. I only use it once in the morning and night now but I haven't had an asthma attack or even struggled for breath since I started using it! I regularly go to the gym and do active stuff now without any problems! :D

Also got him to put two on the one prescription as well so I only have to pay one charge for two inhalers! :D

Behind you... Naked!
Im on the purple one... Seretide, as well as the Ventolin/Salbultamol blue one.

The idea is that if you take your brown one regularly, you should not need the blue one and the blue one is only "Just in case".

Doesnt work like that though does it?

I mean, 3 weeks ago I had a flu, took me nearly 2 weeks to get over it, I then caught a cold ( NO WAY!!! - NOT FAIR ) and this never let my chest get any better and so I developed a chest infection ( Still got it ) and now I have an ear infection too ( FFS ).

Now, during all of this, my purple inhalers dont seem to do bugger all and so I am going through the blue one like hell... Its barely lasting me a week and I have had it redone 3 times this month, and I was refused the last time until I saw the asthma nurse and so I saw her, but she moaned like hell about me not using the purple one properly??

How ****** dare she?

Sure, I know she has the qualifications etc to be a specialist nure, Iwill get her that much courtesy, but unless she suffers from asthma and unless she has to go through trying to breathe throug ha straw and not being able to talk because you cannot breathe propery, then she does not have a clue waht its like.

Christ on a bike, she made me want to just strangle her, the dozy cow.

Anyway, needless to say I scored only between 80 and 90 on my 3 blows which I usually score around 400 and at best I have had 470 ish so that showed I was struggling.

She gave me the inhalers anyway but not after a lengthy lecture on overuse of it etc...

I kept tryign to tell her that its only while I have had the flu but she was stuck so far up her own arse that I dont think she heard any of it.

But anyway, Im digressing...

I have both a blue and a purple inhaler in my car, in the house in the drugs cabinet, again both colours and I also carry a spare blue with me just in case, but I dont carry the purple.

I use Salbutamol and Symbicort 400/12.

Symbicort is by far the best preventer i've ever had. If you've not heard of it, approach your GP.

I also get 4 inhalers to one prescription so i've usually got a spare knocking about. On the odd occasion I do run out, I just get another one from the chemist and tell them i've put a repeat request in.

I get 3 x blue bricanyl inhalers everytime I visit the docs: one at home, one at work and one with me at all times. Brown ones stay at home.

You can buy them online without a prescription, but I don't think its very legal :p

My Bricanyl was stopped years ago due it the CFC inside it and got put on Ventolin. I get 2 on a repeat for the same purpose of keeping one with me and one at home - and back then, only pay one charge for two inhalers. I now have a pre-payment card and its the best thing ever if you get other meds too.
My brown one is called Qvar, again it was changed because of CFC from Becotide (or something sounding like that) and also get Singulair tablets for the night. Singulair seems to have made me free from any attacks although needing Ventolin more now that its cold, and if I am caught in rain and gale, I seem to suffocate. Anyone else get that feeling too or is it an onset of panic too?

Having been a Chronic Asthmas sufferer for 33 years all I can say is make sure you have some spare inhalers.

I won't go anywhere without a fall-back plan, but then again I have been nearly killed (and that is no exaggeration) quite a few times by my condition.

The most annoying thing i find is having to take one out with me on a night out, I dont like going out without one as many people have already said on here, its usually the realisation that i havent got one with me that starts me thinking about my breathing and then the asthma coming on!

I've always wanted to design some smaller more friendly inhalers for nights out etc, praps i should and take em on Dragons Den! :D

Yikes that must be scary, I'm nowhere near that bad fortunately! It's more something that is just quite unpleasant I don't feel like I'm going to die or anything.

I know that feeling Lord - been close myself, and being someone who hates attention or troubling people (incl emergency services!) its not a good feeling. Had to succumb to A&E many years ago when it strikes sometimes in the middle of the night. OD'ing on the blue inhaler when its too late doesnt work and you know its time to get some serious help...

Last time i went to the doc's, nurse was telling me about a new one which combines the blue (bricanyl for me) and brown one (pulmicort) and they're meant to work well together or something, but my asthma has been pretty good last few years. I forget to take my blue one with me most of the time :o.

I'm addicted to salbutomol (blue one) I go through about 1 every 6 - 8 weeks and hate having to call up the docs for a repeat script. ironically I had a peak flow test a year ago and scored over 650 odd which the doc said was just wrong for someone 34 who had been diagnosed with asthma as a child (he was expecting low 300- high 200). Didn't make much difference though he still gave me 2 ventolin. :(
