Editing AVI files

hi i need to shrink a few files that have come up over the 700mb barrier for burning to cd to play as a divx can anyone tell me what program can be used to trim it to fit a disc without having to re-encode the whole file?

i am using mac osx on the latest powerbook.

can't you overburn on the mac to fit more on the disc?

The free (if you have XP) Windows Move Maker can compress AVI files.
