Hello Everyone,

I can't see any threads about the performance of these new chips. I've read a few reviews and the 720 BE seems to be a real winner. Ok so 3 cores does seem odd but it makes sense, the benefit of the extra core for the newer games which take advantage of multithreading but the raw power which allows it to over very good performance for the older single thread happy games. Oh and it helps that's 3.8Ghz clocks on fair seem fairly common from the reviews :)

A little background on these chips. They have both DDR2 & DDR3 memory controllers and although they have 2 less pins than the older AM2+ Socket (938pins) they can be used in almost all AM2+ board with a quick bios flash.

The new chips are:

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 710 2.6GHz (Socket AM3) 1.5MB L2 Cache, 6MB L3 cache

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) 1.5MB L2 Cache, 6MB L3 cache, DDR3-1333 support

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 810 2.6GHz (Socket AM3) 2MB L2 Cache, 4MB L3 cache, DDR3-1333 support

They can be found here on OCUK for pre order:

They can of course also pair with the new AM3 boards for DDR3 which are still in the early days of availability.

OCUK Have 2 gigabyte boards available at time of posting, can find them here:

I think the AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) 1.5MB L2 Cache, 6MB L3 cache, DDR3-1333 support will be quite a good chip

So are Tri Core's the new Dual Core's for AMD or will the Athlon X2 brand continue with support for DDR3 at some point?

The Duals with DDR3 Support will come in time.

Should be around June according my my old therad here:

AMD Regor will be the next generation dual-core AMD Athlon X2 CPUs due out sometime in H2 2008, but more likely Q1 2009. They are likely to support DDR2 and DDR3 as well as HT3. Also, they will likely support AM2+ and AM3 socketed motherboards.
