Hi, please can you help me with finding a first car. hopefully I will pass my test on saturday. I am putting cars into insurance quotes on money supermarket and no matter what can I try the insurance is ridiculous. I'm doing it properly resisting the temptation to front as its way cheaper. what ever car I try the quote is around 4 grand its rediculous. what is a cheap car that is ok and cheap to insure?

thanks

I really want an old beetle, my mates got one we're both doing up at the moment 54 oval rag, its so much fun. I was just thinking about practicality tho because I'd use it to get to school. it depends on how much the car is worth whether I can 3rd part it or not.

You would be better off getting a normal car rather than a beetle as a first car due to reliability (if you get me)

Also are you adding parents onto the insurance quotes you are getting as named drivers?

I wouldn't get a Beetle if you want it to be very reliable, but it'd be reliable enough despite what some will say on here. Although I hate Beetles anyway, but don't just buy one blind.

You should be able to get much better quotes than what you are getting though. I mean I get quote around £1900 for an 18 year old new driver, on things like old Clios.

Are you getting quotes for fully comp? if so stop and go TPFT and get a cheap car. Also do the Pass Pluss course, that shaved £500 off my first years premium

In my experience , if your details are ever so slightly out on these comparison sites they can give you crazy quotes, check everything - and also try lots of different comarison sites and also direct sites (those which dont show on comparisons, eg. direct line).

If all else fails go looking for really unlikely first cars, think the least likley to be owned by Barry Jr , and try quotes on those. :) I remember the pain of insurance , year one.

Phone up a few companies, Admiral, Bell Direct, LV are all worth a try. Some people find they don't get the same price as they do through the comparison sites. Might also be worth picking up one of the motoring mags, there should be a few companies who specialise in high risk advertising.

Me and my friend (we both pretty much the same age) both found ecarinsurance.co.uk cheapest by far, give them a try. I'm driving a Focus as my first car and for some unknown reason it was actually cheaper for me to insure that rather than a 1.25 Fiesta.

people keep reccomending 1.25 fezza's, but they are actually relatively expensive to insure, being insurance group 5, compared to a 1.2 clio which is insurance group 2. its not a massive difference, but they are by no means the cheapest to insure, costs the same to insure as a 1.6 focus.
