Hey Guys,

Thinking of may be sticking a hd4830 into a system with a 5050e and 2gb on a 780G board. I realise the 12V rail is important here, so how many amps should i be looking at to run a card like that?

Since I am on a tigh budget but dont want to go with any generic or unheard of brands, I am looking at the hiper type S 425W with two 17A rail... although the effieiceny of the psu isn't very good.

anyways, you help appreciated!

thanks in advance,

That choice might be fine but I have had a Hiper break on my freinds PC (and it wasn't the notorious 580 modular but a humble 400w model).
For a small extra outlay, I would feel more confidant with :

(personal good experience with)

I've fussed about amps in the past, but where it was a good quality power supply, coupled with a good mid range card (as the 4830 is) , i've not had a problem.

As a reference, my older version 400watt Akasa Paxpower ran my 4850 happily and the 4830 will draw a little less power.

They have a bad reputation for a couple of badly designed product lines. Personally I've had an 880w Hiper for a year and a half and no problems.

But you would probably be better going for something better quality. Never skimp on the PSU.

There was a spate of hiper's going bust (mostly the aforementioned 580W modular) and it's put quite a few people off while giving them a bit of a reputation.

At the same time though, you have to note that the hiper's were quite cheap and fairly popular at the time... I don't personally think that their failure rate was that much above average. Nobody makes atopic about how their PSU has been precisely adequate, do they?

Chances are you'd be fine with a newer Hiper supply, it's just one of those cases where you may aswell avoid the risk for a few £ extra though.

I see, after reading and browsing around a bit more I am trying to decide between an OCZ and Corsair.... 400W or perhaps more. I'll see if anything will be on the weekly deals when I order the rest of the system.
