Removing private plate - what happens to the tax disc?

Hi all,
I'm just in the process of buying a car from a family member. It currently has a private plate on it, as it taxed until next June.

The private plate is being removed before the car is registered to me. What happens to the tax disc though? I don't want to lose the ~10 months of road tax, but it will have a different number plate printed on it. Can anyone advise?

Cheers,
Matt

The process will involve the current owner sending back the tax disc with the private reg on it, and the DVLA replacing it with the plate that will be going on it.

Thanks guys - does that mean I won't be able to use the car for a few days whilst the discs are swapped? I live fairly close to a DVLA office, so will be doing the swap in person with my relatives. Can they issue the new V5/Tax Disc in the office?

phone the dvla, they'll tell you exactly what to do

took about a week for the guy I bought my car from to do it (including getting new plates and tax disc)
