Okay so I have 50mb virgin coming wednesday and obviously will get a new router.

Is it possible to use the old router that netgear WGR614v9 as a network switch for upstairs ? using a flat cat5 cable coming from the router port downstairs to the WGR614v9 upstairs ?

So router downstairs
to WGR614v9
and from WGR614v9 to pc and xbox

I may be mistaken but I believe that particular routers lan ports are configured as a hub rater than a switch

switches and hubs are functionally very similar, that its a hub just means that two computers can't transmit data at the same time

doen't matter unless you have a very busy network

if you want to use it as a hub, as above just disable dhcp, you may need to change the routers default ip address aswell as it may be the same as the virgin routes ip
