Started happening recently on the home PC, W7 x64 explorer just randomly reports an error and then prompts to close down, takes the entire desktop explorer process with it which is then restarted minus the other explorer windows I had open. It always seems to happen when I right click a file, file can text, avi, srt etc...

Anybody else getting this and how do I work out what's causing it to crash?

Similar problems here; happens to me about twice a week without any real reason. Not found a solution yet so will keep an eye on this thread.

I'd be OK with twice a week but this happens a few times every hour. Around an hour ago I right-clicked a txt file and explorer closed with Explorer has encountered a problem. In Event Viewer I do get an entry under application with an Event ID: 1000 but nothing more then that.

This happens to me on Vista64 HP.. I also seem to get explorer.exe sitting at 50% (minimum) idle for ages!... no reason to it that I can see!..

I've now got a batch file that re-starts explorer.exe when the system boots up. its sitting in the 'Startup' folder..

I've not had it rendomly restart explorer.exe, and the process sits at 2% idle now, since using this!..

I've had this on Windows XP + IE8. The solution is to download IE8 again and reinstall it.

The problem is as far as I know there isn't an IE8 installer out there for Windows 7 so you need to go into add/remove programs and remove IE8, reboot, then enable it and then reboot again. Other things to try are making sure Flash Player and, if you use it, Adobe Reader are up to date.

Event ID: 1000
Event Source: Userenv
Description:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722).

HJT log seems clean enough, does your system take ages to log on? I think the error in the event log is a red herring, did reinstalling ie8 fix anything?

Have you installed any software which integrates itself into the right-click context menu?

I've come accross something like this in the past where right clicking files would cause explorer to crash, and it was being caused by a program I had installed which had added an option to the context menu.

Not that I know off but I have been using the Open With feature to browse for a util to open with, this then has the effect of having that util within Open With for that file type.

How do I check what right-click context menus explorer has installed?
