Macbook Pro 13" 3.5mm output digital?

I've read that the 3.5mm output can be used as a digital connector using a toslink cable and a 3.5mm adapter. I just wanted to know if anywhere here is doing anything similar with a DAC or hifi system.

Yep - I've used them just like that for years to output to a DAC.

You can get direct TOSLINK to "mini optical" cables, so you don't always have to use a separate adapter.

I can't comment on the DAC or Hi-Fi side of things but can confirm what you've read about the digital output. I currently have a 13" MacBook Pro with digital output to a surround sound system using a TOSLINK cable and 3.5mm adapter. Works a treat.
