A friends laptop is faulty, it's been problematic since purchasing it. It's a few years old and hes has decided to replace it with a Dell.

The faulty laptop won't boot so he can't access the drive to retreive the documents and photo's stored on the drive.

Is it possible to get a ICY box, insert the drive and connect it to the new laptop he can then use the hard drive as a back up aswell?

Yeah, though an icy box would be a little expensive for that! you could just get a small sata usb caddy to put the drive in.... can get one of those for a tenner, and some even have eSATA as well as USB plugs. Afraid I can't give links for obvious reasons!
