Im about two days from finally taking the big step and ordering a gaming rig. Will only be used for gaming.

Just wondering if worth extra £70 or so for the 860?

I know it's future proof for the I9, and the 750 isn't. But reality is i will not change the CPU, and after a year or two, i will just buy a new rig like i always do.

So im wondering for Gaming performance for now & next year or so, will i really get a benefit from the 860 over 750.....

Only thing i will update is after christmas for the GPU. Im thinking of going the 4890 or GTX 275 route for now, then say January upgrade to the ATI 5870 when around £250 mark.

By then DX11 should be on majority of the game coming out from next year on.

So 750 or 860?

P.S a nice review of these two in game tests on a card would he handy, if anyone has a article;)

Yeh i could go for 5850, was my plan for while. But for extra £50 or so, not sure it's worth it right now.

WRONG the[B socket 1366[/B] e.g i7 9xx series, is the socket for I9, the i7 860 is SOCKET 1156 and is a different socket to the future I9

Back to the drawing boards and textbooks for you im afraid lol. Gotta love intel though for confusing the **** out of everyone

i9 will be largely worthless for years to come for gaming so I wouldn't worry about that.

Build for the now, and the best results you'll see on the 1156 platform is from an 870.

What size display do you use?

It would be 24" 1920 x 1080

Right. The requirement for dual GPUs on that size resolution is practically nil, which means you won't benefit from the extra bandwidth of 2x x16 x16 PCI-E slots on 1366, so it seems 1156 is the best choice for you. Like that guy above me said, the 860 is on 1156 so you won't be on the X58 platform. If you want to keep i9 open to you (which I don't think you should really factor heavily into your choice) then you'll be looking at a i7 920 ideally, but that's not an improvement over a 750 anyway.

The 860 and 750 perform pretty much exactly the same in games. The 860 will perform slightly better on desktop applications due to Hyperthreading and the extra threads.

So, do you want the extra oomph on your desktop? That's pretty much what it comes down to.

Edit: http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i5-750-core-i7-860-870-processor-review-test/18 here's a good comparison.

Edit2: Threads, not cores.

KCer, you said AM3 is dead!!

(sorry about hijacking)

Also, the i5 is about par for games as a i7-920 from all of the benchmarks I saw. The i7-20 is only better for video decoding etc...

Now I know you mentioned a socket 1156 i7, and they are the same performance for games as the i5, so I would advise you go for the i5, unless you want 1fps more with the 870. But you might as well get a better GPU than a little bit better CPU.
